EPL: Tottenham opens talks with Liverpool over Robertson move

Tottenham Hotspur have opened talks with Liverpool over a potential move for left-back Andy Robertson, BBC Sport understands.

According to BBC Sport on Friday, the 31-year-old Scotland international is out of contract at Anfield in the summer and said last week that he remains undecided about his future. Robertson is seeking regular playing time ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Spurs have made an initial approach to Liverpool, although no agreement has been reached at this stage.

Robertson has started just four Premier League matches this season, with summer signing Milos Kerkez having taken over as Liverpool’s first-choice left-back. His most recent appearance came as a substitute in the 1-1 draw with Burnley on 17 January.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has said Robertson remains an important member of the squad and praised his professionalism following the loss of his starting role.

If Robertson were to leave during the current window, Kerkez would be Liverpool’s only senior left-back, although the club could recall Kostas Tsimikas from his loan spell at Roma.

Tottenham recently completed the signing of Brazilian left-back Souza and already have several options in the position. Destiny Udogie has been manager Thomas Frank’s preferred choice this season, with Djed Spence also providing cover.

However, the Spurs have been left short of experience after Ben Davies was ruled out for the rest of the season with a broken ankle sustained on Sunday. Davies, 32, is currently the only Tottenham player over the age of 30.

Robertson joined Liverpool from Hull City for £8 million in 2017 under former manager Jurgen Klopp and has made 363 appearances for the club. He has won nine major trophies at Anfield, including two Premier League titles and the Champions League.
