EPL: Promoted Hull stun Man United 2-0 in season opener
Newly promoted Hull City produced a stunning result on the opening weekend of the 2026/27 Premier League season, beating Manchester United 2-0 at the MKM Stadium on Saturday to leave the visitors reeling after their first competitive outing under Michael Carrick.
Semi Ajayi opened the scoring in the 17th minute with a close-range finish following a corner, before Nobel Mendy doubled the lead in the 38th minute with a header from a set-piece delivery by Regan Slater.
Manchester United dominated possession but struggled to break down a well-organised Hull defence. The official club account posted afterwards: “Defeat in our opening game.”
The Tigers, back in the top flight after winning promotion through the Championship play-offs, defended resolutely thereafter and held on for a famous victory in front of 24,470 fans.
Fans reacted strongly on X to the result. #WisdomMatic wrote “Thank you for bringing my back to reality and reminding how shit this football club is. Michael Carrick that was absolutely horrendous.” #SamC_reports said “Utterly disappointing.”
#ManUnitedMedia posted “Disgusting.” #mufcacademy91 added “Absolute jokes. No words.” #Letha13579 commented “Clownish team. You are even beaten by a newly promoted club! Man United is very useless.” #StrettyTalkz noted “Woeful. Defence got broken down by fucking McBurnie. Crosses weren’t going anywhere. Need to improve.”
The result leaves Manchester United with a difficult start to the campaign while Hull City celebrate a memorable return to the Premier League.
