Enugu traffickers who bought two children N2m nabbed

The Enugu State Police Command has disclosed that one of the 10 suspected traffickers recently arrested confessed to buying two children in the state for a total sum of N2.3m.

Spokesperson for the command, Daniel Ndukwe, stated this in a statement on Saturday, revealing that the arrested suspects were involved in both local and transnational child trafficking networks.

According to Ndukwe, the arrests follow a series of coordinated operations carried out between June 30 and July 16, 2025.

He noted that six stolen and trafficked children were rescued, describing the raid as part of the command’s ongoing efforts to curb child theft and trafficking across the state.

Among the rescued victims were a one-year-and-seven-month-old male child and a 14-year-old girl who had been trafficked to Ghana.

The statement read, “On July 15, 2025, at about 9:30 pm, operatives from the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad of the Command, working with Neighbourhood Watch members, arrested Chiaha Josephine (female, aged 64) and Ozomma Christopher Ubanagum (male, 67) in Ezeagu LGA.”

“Two trafficked children were rescued – Loveth Mfonobong (female, aged 16) and Benjamin Alex Okon (male, aged 12). Josephine confessed to buying Loveth in 2021 for N900,000 and Benjamin in 2024 for N1,400,000.”

The arrested suspects, according to the statement, will be arraigned in court after investigations, while efforts are underway to apprehend other members of the syndicates at large.
