Edo TikToker arraigned over false kidnapping claim

The Edo State Police Command has arraigned a social media content creator, Osarobo Omoyemen, popularly known online as “Madam Oil Rice,” for allegedly fabricating a kidnapping story to gain followers on TikTok.

According to a statement by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Moses Yamu, Omoyemen had claimed she was kidnapped along Upper Sakponba Road in Benin City, rescued by police, and detained at Akpata Police Station, where N10,000 was allegedly collected as bail.

“Following the report, the command immediately commenced investigation. Findings revealed that the entire story was completely fabricated and deliberate,” he stated.

During interrogation, Yamu said the 24-year-old influencer confessed to have she staged the incident solely to generate online content and attract followers to her page.

The police noted that the false claim was not only misleading but had the potential to incite hostility against law enforcement and create unnecessary tension in the state.

“It was also discovered that she deleted an earlier video showing an accomplice appealing to viewers to follow her page, clearly exposing the motive behind the false alarm. The suspect has been arrested and charged to court on November 20, 2025.

“This action is intended to serve as a deterrent to others who may attempt to misuse social media to create panic or disrupt public peace,” Yamu added.

The police command further warned residents against spreading unverified information and emphasized its commitment to maintaining peace and security in Edo State.
