Dangote reveals how Trump feels about his refinery
President of Dangote Industries Limited (DIL), Aliko Dangote, has dismissed claims circulating on social media that United States President, Donald Trump, is unhappy with the establishment of his $20 billion Dangote Refinery.
Dangote made this known while speaking during a press conference on Sunday, where he addressed concerns over fuel supply challenges and the state of petroleum infrastructure in the country.
The clarification followed online speculation linking Trump’s recent threat to strike terrorists targeting Christians in parts of Nigeria to the operations of Africa’s largest refinery.
Trump had warned of possible military action against terrorists attacking Christians at various locations in Nigeria, a statement that sparked propaganda and widespread reactions on social media, including claims that the remarks were connected to the Dangote Refinery.
Addressing journalists, Dangote said the claims were unfounded, noting that the United States remains a major supplier of crude oil to the refinery.
He said suggestions that Trump was angry over the refinery’s establishment were inaccurate, stressing that the business relationship between the refinery and the US contradicts such narratives.
“The US has been one of our major suppliers of crude, which is why when someone says Trump is not happy with our refinery, it’s not true,” he said.
“Trump is more than happy with our refinery, because on average for a year, we do not buy more than 100 million barrels from the US.”
Dangote also urged Nigeria to prioritise attracting more investment into fuel production rather than accusing the 650,000 barrels-per-day Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals of attempting to create a monopoly.
According to him, Nigeria’s fuel distribution problems existed long before his company entered the sector, noting that fuel queues have been a recurring issue since 1972, and that attempts to solve these long-standing challenges are often met with criticism instead of support.
