Adeleke’s Osun victory was ‘war’ against 17 govs, 50 senators — Davido
Afrobeats superstar, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has described the re-election of his uncle, Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, as a remarkable victory achieved against formidable political opposition.
Davido spoke on Tuesday while addressing journalists at his country home following the governor’s victory in the August 15 Osun State governorship election.
Congratulating his uncle, the singer described the contest as a difficult battle, claiming that several prominent political figures rallied against the incumbent governor.
“Let me congratulate my governor for his re-election for the hard-fought battle. Let me not say battle but war, where you have 17 governors, 50 senators, House of Reps, I don’t know how many they were against one man and he came out victorious. God is good,” Davido said.
The singer attributed Adeleke’s victory largely to the support of Osun voters, whom he praised for standing by the governor and protecting their votes during the election.
He said the level of support for the Adeleke family was overwhelming, adding that he became emotional several times while witnessing the events of election day.
“I can’t remember how many times I cried that day because the love was massive,” he said.
Davido said the governor’s victory should serve as a lesson to political leaders across the country, arguing that leaders who genuinely serve their people would enjoy their support at the polls.
“My uncle should be an example to all other people out there. It shows all other governors out there that if you work for the people, the people will be with you and God,” he said.
The singer also thanked the people of Osun State for supporting Adeleke and his family despite what he described as attempts at intimidation and vote-buying during the election.
Beyond the election, Davido announced plans to intensify his involvement in youth and sports development in the state.
As chairman of the Osun State Sports Trust Fund, he said he deliberately postponed some of his planned initiatives until after the governorship election.
As chairman of the Sports Trust Fund, I want to do a lot of things but waited for the election to be over,” he said.
According to him, one of the initiatives being considered is the development of a recreation centre for young people, with facilities including football pitches, swimming pools and basketball courts.
Davido said the proposed centre would provide young people with opportunities to discover, develop and showcase their sporting talents while promoting healthy recreation.
The singer has remained one of Adeleke’s most vocal celebrity supporters and was actively involved in the governor’s campaign ahead of the election.
Adeleke secured a second term after defeating his major challenger, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress, in the August 15 poll.
Following the conclusion of the election, Davido said his focus would now shift towards initiatives aimed at improving opportunities for young people in Osun State, particularly through sports and recreation.
