500-level Covenant University student dies during football training
A 500-level student of Covenant University, Toluwase Jesutunmise, has died after collapsing during a football training session on campus.
The incident occurred on Monday and has raised concerns about student health monitoring and emergency response systems in tertiary institutions.
The university, in a statement issued on Wednesday, confirmed the incident, stating that the student had actively participated in the training before stepping aside after complaining of leg pain and fatigue.
According to the institution, moments after leaving the pitch, he was observed gasping for breath by teammates, prompting an emergency response.
He was rushed to the university’s medical centre, located close to the training ground, where medical personnel commenced resuscitation efforts using cardiopulmonary resuscitation and an automated external defibrillator.
However, he was pronounced dead on arrival at the emergency unit.
The Vice-Chancellor, Timothy Anake, described the late student as diligent and vibrant, noting that his death was a significant loss to the university community.
Preliminary findings, according to the institution, indicate that a previously undisclosed heart condition may have been responsible for the incident.
The university stated that there was no negligence on the part of its medical team, adding that all necessary emergency equipment was available and utilised.
It also disclosed that members of the management remained with the family after they were notified and have continued to provide support.
The institution expressed condolences to the bereaved family, noting that the incident has left the campus community in mourning.
