2027: Atiku can anoint Peter Obi to win for ADC - Yunusa Tanko
Yunusa Tanko Yakasai, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, has said former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar could support and “anoint” Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to fly the flag of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the 2027 general election.
Yakasai spoke on TVC’s Politics On Sunday while reacting to the ongoing debate over the ADC’s 2027 presidential ticket and the possible roles of key opposition figures ahead of the polls.
Asked what would happen if Atiku prevented Obi from securing the ADC ticket, Yakasai dismissed the suggestion, describing the former Vice President as a leader and father
Atiku Abubakar is a leader, he is a father. He will not even join in that shenanigan,” he said.
According to him, the former vice-president has the right to contest but could also choose to support another candidate if that would improve the party’s chances.
“He has the right (to contest) but he also has the right to anoint somebody. He can, it is within his fundamental human rights as a father who wants to win.
“Winning does not mean I have to be the one, winning can be me taking you and say go and win for us, I know you are capable. It is possible,” Yakasai added.
The remarks come amid growing discussions within opposition circles over the presidential ticket of the coalition-backed party as Obi’s supporters continuously call on the party leaders to present their principal as their 2027 presidential candidate.
Meanwhile, the ADC has cautioned its members and supporters of presidential hopefuls against rhetoric capable of dividing the party.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, issued the warning during a live audio conversation on X, formerly Twitter, on the state of the nation and the political climate.
Abdullahi urged party supporters to shun divisive narratives ahead of the party’s primary in June.
