17-year-old orphan discharged from hospital after amputation

A 17- year old orphan, Racheal Onyinyechi, who has undergone amputation after being rescued by a human rights organisation, Stand For Humanity Foundation, has been discharged from Imo State Specialists Hospital Umuguma in Owerri, Imo State.

Onyinyechi was abandoned under the care of her grandmother who could barely feed herself after a motor accident, leaving her situation to degenerate into the infection of the leg and amputation. She has, however, been certified fit after the treatment.

The situation prompted the founder of the organisation, Chidiebube Okeoma, to move in and assist the orphan from Umunachi community in the Obowo Local Government Area of the state on June 4, 2025.

Okeoma, in a statement on Monday in Owerri, announced that the minor had been discharged and taken home after her right limb was amputated in order to save her life.

Okeoma who disclosed that the orphan without a sibling was managed for one month at the hospital thanked Imo State Health Insurance Agency for picking 100 percent of the girl’s hospital bills.

He said that the foundation was grateful to the Imo State Health Insurance Agency led by its Executive Secretary, Dr.UcheEwelike for picking one hundred percent of the hospital bills and compassionate Nigerians who assisted the organization for her upkeep and feeding throughout her stay in the hospital.

According to him, “We at Stand For Humanity Foundation are happy to announce that the 17- year- old orphan, Racheal Onyinyechi we rescued from her village in Umunachi community in Obowo in a very precarious condition with maggots coming out of her body has been certified fit to go home after a successful amputation procedure.
