US launches online portal to report visa fraud, misuse

The US Department of State has launched an online portal allowing members of the public to report suspected visa fraud and misuse.

The department said the new tool is designed to provide a convenient and reliable channel for submitting information that could help authorities identify and investigate suspected violations of U.S. visa laws.

According to the State Department, tips from members of the public have helped authorities identify and hold accountable tens of thousands of people suspected of visa fraud during President Donald Trump’s second term.

The department said visa fraud can involve falsified documents or travel plans, sham marriages arranged by brokers, shell companies, fabricated job offers, birth tourism and other schemes intended to obtain entry into the United States through fraudulent means.

It warned that such activities can affect U.S. communities, the economy, American workers, national security and public safety.

The Department of State said its Bureau of Consular Affairs is stepping up fraud detection and prevention efforts under the leadership of Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

It added that those found violating U.S. laws could face consequences including visa revocation and referral to law enforcement agencies for further investigation.

Members of the public with information about suspected visa fraud or misuse are encouraged to submit reports through the department’s official portal.
