Troops nab IPOB Commander ‘Gentle De Yahoo,’ rescue multiple kidnap victims

Troops of Nigerian Army have arrested a notorious commander of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), Ifeanyi Eze Okorienta, widely known as “Gentle de Yahoo.”
Sources said the feared kingpin, who had for years terrorized communities across Okigwe and neighboring areas, was captured during a coordinated intelligence-driven operation at his hideout in Aku-Ihube, Okigwe Local Government Area of Imo State.
The successful operation was executed by troops of the 34 Artillery Brigade, working closely with sister security services and other law enforcement agencies.
During the raid, troops seized a cache of weapons and other items linked to the group’s violent activities.
“Recovered items include One English-made pistol,120 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, 25 rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition, One cartridge, Six mobile phones, Military and Police uniforms, and, a German flag, reportedly used as a symbol by the terror group.
“In addition, the troops uncovered a workshop used to dismantle stolen vehicles for resale, disrupting a major criminal enterprise in the region. Ten motorcycles found at the scene were destroyed to prevent further use in criminal operations.
Military sources described the arrest as a “major relief for residents” of Imo State, who have endured months of attacks, kidnappings, and extortion allegedly orchestrated by Gentle de Yahoo and his gang.
“This arrest is a clear message that no criminal, no matter how notorious, can hide forever. The people of Imo can now breathe easier,” the source added.
Residents in Okigwe and surrounding communities have hailed the operation as a significant step toward restoring peace in the South East. Many expressed optimism that the capture of the fugitive will reduce violent attacks in the area.
Community leaders, while praising the troops, urged authorities to maintain the momentum by dismantling remaining criminal cells and improving intelligence sharing among agencies
Nationwide Counter-Terrorism Successes
The Army’s operation in Imo State was part of a wider nationwide offensive targeting kidnappers, armed robbers, terrorists, and violent extremist groups.
In Adamawa State, troops rescued 5 kidnapped victims in Madagali Local Government Area, reuniting them safely with their families.
In Katsina State 5 victims were freed at Kukasheka Ward in Malumfashi Local Government Area, while two others were rescued in Lokoja, Kogi State.
Also in another Katsina operation, soldiers neutralized 2 terrorists and recovered an AK-47 rifle, ammunition, and a motorcycle.
In Benue State One violent extremist was killed, with a mobile phone and assorted charms recovered.
Across Benue, Kogi, and Kaduna States, 11 suspects were arrested for offenses ranging from armed robbery and gun running to terrorist financing.
In Plateau State, troops recovered 40 rustled cattle, which were promptly returned to their rightful owners.
Military authorities have praised the gallantry of the troops involved, pledging to sustain pressure on criminal groups until lasting peace is achieved across the country.
“These successes are part of our renewed resolve to rid every part of this country of criminals. We will not relent until peace is fully restored,” a senior Army officer stated.
