Tope Alabi threatens legal action over online defamation
Popular Nigerian gospel singer Tope Alabi has threatened legal action against individuals who publish, share or circulate statements she considers false and defamatory about her on social media and other platforms.
The warning was contained in a public notice issued by her lawyers, Oakmount Legal Practitioners, and shared on the singer’s Instagram page on Friday, October 23, 2026.
In the notice, the legal team said the singer, whose full name is Evangelist Patricia Temitope Alabi, had instructed them to take steps to protect her reputation against publications capable of causing damage to her personal, professional and spiritual standing.
According to the lawyers, Alabi has spent nearly three decades building a reputation based on integrity, honour and public trust.
The notice stated: “Our Client has, for almost thirty (30) years, built a reputation of integrity, honour and public trust in her personal, professional and spiritual life.”
The legal team expressed concern over what it described as false, misleading and harmful statements allegedly being circulated about the singer.
The lawyers warned that anyone responsible for publishing such statements could face legal consequences, depending on the circumstances and applicable legal provisions.
They also cautioned social media users against reposting or forwarding potentially defamatory content, stressing that responsibility may extend beyond the person who originally made the statement.
The notice explained that liability could affect “the originator of the statement and to any person who repeats, republishes, reposts, shares, forwards or otherwise amplifies the same,” subject to the facts of each case and any applicable legal defences.
The lawyers further warned that operating anonymous or pseudonymous social media accounts would not automatically shield individuals from legal liability.
“The use of anonymous, pseudonymous or unverified accounts does not, of itself, confer immunity from legal liability,” the notice stated.
As part of the warning, the lawyers directed individuals who had already published material considered defamatory to remove it immediately and refrain from further publication.
They stated that deleting a post would not automatically eliminate possible liability for its earlier publication.
The legal team also indicated that the singer could seek legal remedies, including damages, injunctions to prevent further publication, court-ordered retractions, public apologies and legal costs.
The notice added that the lawyers had been authorised to institute legal proceedings against individuals whose actions gave rise to an actionable claim, without further notice.
However, the legal warning clarified that it was not intended to prevent legitimate criticism, truthful statements or the lawful exercise of freedom of expression.
The notice stated: “Nothing in this Notice is intended to restrict truthful statements, fair comment on matters of public interest, or the lawful exercise of the right to freedom of expression guaranteed by law.”
The message serves as a warning to social media users to exercise caution when making or circulating claims about the singer.
Although the legal notice outlined the potential consequences of defamatory publications, it did not identify specific individuals against whom legal proceedings had been initiated.
The development highlights the growing concerns surrounding online defamation and the potential legal consequences of publishing or sharing harmful claims about public figures.
Tope Alabi, widely known for her gospel music and contributions to Nigeria’s gospel music industry, remains a prominent figure among Christian music lovers.
