Tinubu welcomes Nigeria’s membership into World Energy Council

President Bola Tinubu on Friday welcomed Nigeria’s formal admission as the newest National Member Committee of the World Energy Council.

Tinubu described it as a proud moment for the country and a strong vote of confidence in Nigeria’s energy reforms and leadership role in Africa.

He conveyed his felicitations in a statement signed Friday by the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, titled ‘President Tinubu Welcomes Nigeria into World Energy Council, Congratulates Chairman Abdulrazaq Isa, CEO Bala Wunti and the Inaugural Board.’

Onanuga stated, “The President said Nigeria’s entry into the century-old global network of over 100 countries positions the country to more actively shape global discourse on energy security, equity and sustainability.

President Tinubu congratulated the inaugural leadership of WEC Nigeria, Mr Abdulrazaq Isa, OFR, as Chairman and Mr Bala Wunti as Chief Executive Officer, alongside other distinguished Nigerians drawn from across the energy value chain, regulatory institutions, industry associations, finance, academia and the Future Energy Leaders community, who will serve as inaugural Board members.”

Tinubu described Isa as a distinguished patriot and trailblasing industrialist whose pioneering investments in indigenous refining and industrial energy have opened a new frontier for Nigerian enterprise.

He described Wunti as one of Nigeria’s finest energy strategists and reform champions, whose over three decades of exemplary service, defined by integrity and strategic vision, have been marked by landmark reforms that significantly enhanced national revenues and restored investor confidence in Nigeria’s energy sector.

The President said the blend of seasoned industry captains, regulators, finance experts and youth leaders on the board gave WEC Nigeria the balance, neutrality and credibility required to succeed.

“Nigeria has joined the World Energy Council to lead, not just participate, to ensure Africa’s voice shapes global energy decisions,” Tinubu said.

He affirmed the full support of the Federal Government for WEC Nigeria as a neutral, technology-agnostic platform for policy dialogue, investment mobilisation and innovation, and reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to working with WEC London and its global community to deliver secure, affordable and sustainable energy for all.

The President wished the Chairman, Chief Executive and the inaugural board every success in what he described as a historic national assignment.

The World Energy Council, established in 1923 and headquartered in London, is one of the world’s oldest and most influential energy policy bodies, bringing together governments, private sector leaders, academics and civil society across more than 100 countries to shape global dialogue on energy transition, security and sustainability.

Membership through National Member Committees gives countries a formal seat at major global energy forums, including the World Energy Congress, and has historically been used by member states to attract investment, benchmark policy against international standards and strengthen their voice in shaping global energy governance frameworks.
