Three women arrested for trafficking six Benue orphans

The Benue State Police Command has arrested three women for allegedly trafficking six orphans between the ages of seven and nine to Anambra State.

According to the command’s spokesperson, Udeme Edet, the children were taken from Divine Peace and Grace Orphanage in Jos, Plateau State, under suspicious circumstances.

The suspects were identified as Monica Okonkwo (57), Nkiru Nwosu (55), and Oyechele Francisca (57), all from Umude Oka, Dunukofia, Anambra State.

In a statement issued on Friday in Makurdi, Edet said the three women were intercepted while transporting the children. She explained that the suspects were arrested on November 20, 2025, when policemen on patrol along the Orokam–Enugu Road stopped their vehicle

The suspects were found in transit with six children. The children were taken from Divine Peace and Grace Orphanage, Jos, Plateau State, under questionable circumstances,” she said.

Edet added that the suspects claimed they were transporting the children to Anambra State.

“The children have been successfully rescued and are under protective care, while the suspects are in custody as investigations continue at the State CID,” she added.

Edet also disclosed that two suspects linked to stolen motorcycles along George Akume Way, Makurdi, were lynched by members of the public before the arrival of the police.

She added that several stolen motorcycles and firearms were recovered when officers arrived at the scene.
