Three policemen detained as Bauchi suspect dies in custody

Three policemen in Bauchi State have been detained in connection with the death of a suspect, Abubakar Auwal, who died at a divisional police headquarters in Jega.
Auwal was said to have died in police custody under suspicious circumstances.
Sunday news gathered that the Divisional Police Officer of the affected station has also been redeployed.
Auwal, according to a statement issued on Saturday by the Police Public Relations Officer of the state, Nafiu Abubakar, was arrested following a complaint about the theft of the rims of a trailer truck at the station on April 15, 2025.
According to the statement, the suspect collapsed in custody on the morning of April 16 and was rushed to the general hospital in Jega, where he was pronounced dead at 10:00 pm.
The state Commissioner of Police, Bello Sani, immediately ordered a discreet investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department.”
“Preliminary findings led to the detention of three officers believed to be culpable in the incident. In addition, the Divisional Police Officer of the affected station has been issued a query and redeployed.

Meanwhile, the command did not disclose the names of the detained officers but confirmed that further investigations are ongoing.
