Sanwo-Olu announces 30% fare reduction for Red Line, inaugurates Abule-Egba Bus Terminal

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has approved a 30% fare reduction for the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Red Line services. The new fare will see a trip between Agbado and Oyingbo drop from N1,500 to N1,000, effective immediately.
The announcement came during the inauguration of the Abule-Egba Bus Terminal, a significant infrastructure project designed to improve public transportation in the state. Located along the Oshodi-Abule Egba Expressway, the terminal is strategically positioned to complement the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) network along the corridor.
Sanwo-Olu explained, “We have reviewed the numbers and decided on a 30% reduction in fares on the Red Line. A trip from Agbado to Oyingbo will now cost N1,000. This is part of our efforts to encourage wider adoption of the Red Line and provide some relief to commuters in the face of current economic challenges.”
The Red Line began passenger operations in September 2024 with six daily trips and has since increased to nine daily trips as of February 2025.
Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of the Abule-Egba Bus Terminal in improving connectivity and easing commuting challenges for Lagosians. “This terminal is a testament to our administration’s commitment to providing efficient, accessible public transportation. It will serve as a vital hub, seamlessly integrating with the BRT network and offering a comfortable and organized transit experience,” he said.
He also highlighted the terminal’s role in the future extension of the Quality Bus Corridor (QBC) project, and the planned expansion of the BRT system to Sango. His administration remains focused on developing integrated multimodal transport solutions to address the growing transportation needs of the state.
Earlier, Abimbola Akinajo, Managing Director of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), stressed the importance of sustainable infrastructure in building a seamless transport system. She noted that the state government has invested heavily in infrastructure for public transportation, including rail, bus services, and water, and emphasized that bus terminals like the one at Abule Egba are crucial for efficient passenger movement.
Akinajo further mentioned that other bus terminals, such as those in Ikeja, Oshodi, Ajah, Oyingbo, and Yaba, have already been completed, and the Iyana Ipaja Bus Terminal is currently under construction.
The Abule-Egba terminal boasts features such as loading bays, a terminal building with customer service areas, waiting zones, spaces for commercial services, and green energy provisions.
Dignitaries at the event included Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, Secretary to the State Government Barr. ‘Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, and other government officials.
