Rector leads fitness walk, emphasises regular exercise for healthy living

The Ogun State Polytechnic of Health and Allied Sciences on Tuesday held the 2026 Rector’s Fitness and Wellness Walk to commemorate World Physical Activity Day, drawing participation from staff, students, and members of the host community in a collective push for healthier living.

The initiative, according to a statement issued on Tuesday, was held in the Ilese-Ijebu axis and was designed to promote regular physical activity and raise awareness of the benefits of an active, healthy lifestyle, especially in preventing lifestyle-related illnesses and improving overall well-being.

The fitness walk, which was reportedly led by the Rector, Dr Rasak Akinbo, began at the polytechnic’s administrative block.

Participants moved through key parts of the host community to the Ilese Roundabout before returning to campus, maintaining high energy and enthusiasm throughout the exercise.

Speaking during the event, Akinbo emphasised that, as a health-focused institution, OSPOHAS must lead by example in promoting preventive healthcare.

He described regular exercise as a vital component of healthy living, adding that the initiative is part of broader efforts to instil wellness habits among staff and students of the institution.

Also speaking, the Registrar, Mrs Modupe Ajala, said, “We all know the importance of consistent physical activity in maintaining good health and reducing the risk of non-communicable diseases

As an institution devoted to producing manpower for the country’s health sector, this is what we teach our students, and we should be at the vanguard of practising what we teach for the benefit of each and every one of us.

“I therefore encourage all participants to adopt exercise as a daily routine beyond organised events. It is what we must do regularly to keep our bodies in top shape.”

The event also featured light workout sessions and health awareness messages in line with global advocacy for active living.

Participants commended the polytechnic management for the initiative, expressing hope that it would become a sustained programme in line with the state government’s commitment to healthy living under the administration of Governor Dapo Abiodun.
