Police nab three over murder of two cops in Rivers

The Rivers State Police Command said its operatives have arrested three suspects allegedly involved in the murder of two policemen in Aluu, Ikwerre Local Government Area of the State.

The command said the officers were on a stop-and-search duty in the Aluu area on June 29th, 2026 when the miscreants launched a commando-style attack, opened fire on them and carted away their AK-47 rifles.

According to a statement by the two operatives, one had one of his legs amputated due to gunshot injuries he sustained and eventually succumbed to death while being treated in the hospital.

Spokesperson for the State Police Command, Blessing Agabe, disclosed this in the statement issued in Port Harcourt on Tuesday and sent to newsmen.

Agabe, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, said the arrest of the suspects followed the directives of the State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, for a swift probe, arrest of the criminals and recovery of the stolen rifles and other firearms in their possession.

She said that, sequel to that directive, operatives of the Command’s violence crime response unit, through credible intelligence and sustained tactical operations, trailed the suspects to their hideout and swooped on them.

The statement reads, “The Rivers State Police Command has recorded a significant breakthrough in the investigation into the gruesome murder of two police officers who were attacked while conducting a stop-and-search operation within the Aluu Division area on 29th June, 2026, in which one of the officers’ legs was fatally injured and later amputated

Following the tragic incident, which claimed the lives of the two officers and resulted in the theft of their service AK-47 rifles, the Commissioner of Police, Rivers State Command,  Olugbenga Adepoju, immediately visited the Division and directed that all operational and intelligence assets of the Command be deployed to ensure the arrest of the perpetrators and the recovery of the stolen police firearms.

“Acting on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, operatives of the Command’s Violence Crime Response Unit VCRU) (AKU), through credible intelligence and sustained tactical operations, arrested three members of the gang.”

The statement listed the arrested suspects as Maduabuchi Emeka alias “Doctor,”  aged 34, a native of Egbata Community in Omoku, Ogba/Egbeme/Ndoni LGA of the state.

The others, ASP Agabe said, are one Chinedu Owhor (Male), 42 years old, a native of Akabuka, also in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni LGA, but residing in Aluu Community and one Kamachi Joe (Male), 28 years old, a native of Egbata Community, also in  ONELGA.

“Exhibit recovered in total includes three AK- 47 rifles and one Scorpion rifle. The suspect has also linked other murder cases currently under investigation.”

The state police image maker said the command has spread its dragnet to apprehend the fourth member of the gang, currently at large.

Meanwhile, the state’s Commissioner of Police commended the operatives for their professionalism, gallantry, and dedication, saying the breakthrough demonstrates the Command’s resolve to ensure that those who attack police officers or engage in violent crimes have no hiding place in the State.

CP Adepoju, reaffirmed the Command’s unwavering commitment to the initiative of the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, in protecting lives and property.as.well as bring all criminal elements to justice.

He further warned all involved in crime that the long hand of the law will catch up with them, stressing the need for them to immediately change from their evil ways or be ready to face the full weight of the law.

While reiterating that Rivers State is not a safe haven for criminals, he said the Command remains resolute in identifying, arresting and prosecuting anyone who threatens the peace and security of the state.

Adepoju urged residents to sustain their partnership with the Command by providing timely and credible information that will aid ongoing efforts to combat crime and enhance public safety across the state.
