Osun establishes joint security task force

The Osun State Government has approved the establishment of a Joint Security Task Force to strengthen security response following recent security alerts in the state.

The government also pledged to provide the necessary logistics to support the task force and improve the protection of lives and property across the state.

The state Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday.

According to Alimi, the decision was reached at a State Security Council meeting convened by Governor Ademola Adeleke on Wednesday and presided over by Deputy Governor Kola Adewusi.

The newly deployed Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Zungura, attended the meeting alongside other security commanders in the state.

Adewusi, while opening the meeting, commended the security commanders for their efforts during recent security challenges and urged them to remain vigilant in the face of fresh threats.

The statement read, “Following the recent security alerts, the Osun State Government has approved the establishment of a Joint Security Taskforce to strengthen security response and alert to threats to lives and property in the state.

The decision was adopted at the State Security Council meeting convened yesterday by Governor Ademola Adeleke and presided over by the Deputy Governor, Prince Kola Adewusi, with the new Commissioner of Police personally in attendance alongside other security Commanders.

The Deputy Governor, while opening the meeting, conveyed the best wishes of the state Governor to the service commanders and lauded their steadfastness during recent security challenges and tasked them not to relent in the face of fresh security threats.”

He also said the governor remained committed to further supporting security agencies, while urging traditional rulers to sustain their roles in local security oversight.

The council also sought to reassure residents, saying Osun remained safe and secure.

However, it urged residents to remain vigilant, particularly around churches, mosques and schools, and called on stakeholders to strengthen security measures around their premises.

“The Nigeria Police, in conjunction with other security agencies, were also directed to be on a 24 hour red alert to curtail the threats of the said bandits and terrorists.

“At the meeting, an agreement was also reached between the Ministry of Justice, the Nigeria Police, and the DSS, to collaborate with a view to ensuring that all the suspects are properly investigated and prosecuted accordingly without delay,” it added.

The council commended Zungura for what it described as policing reforms since he assumed office and for attending the security meeting in person.
