New Yobe varsity VC assumes office, unveils agenda

The newly appointed Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Gashua, Yobe State, Professor Yaqub Geidam, has officially assumed office, unveiling plans to consolidate existing achievements and reposition the institution for academic excellence, research growth, and infrastructural development.

 recalls that the Governing Council of the university approved Geidam’s appointment as the fourth substantive Vice-Chancellor at a statutory meeting presided over by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Ibrahim Usman.

According to a statement signed by the Head of the Information and Protocol Unit, Mallam Adamu Saleh, the appointment followed a rigorous, merit-based selection process conducted in line with the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act and other extant regulations.

Speaking during the handover ceremony on Wednesday at the university’s 1,000-capacity lecture hall, Geidam expressed gratitude to the Governing Council and the university community for their confidence in himL

I am grateful for the trust placed in me and fully aware of the responsibilities that come with this office. Together, we will build on the solid foundation already laid and move this university to greater heights,” he said.

The new Vice-Chancellor outlined his priority areas, which include strengthening academic standards, promoting research and innovation, enhancing staff welfare, improving infrastructure, and ensuring overall institutional growth.

Geidam, a professor of Veterinary Medicine for over two decades, is a seasoned academic and administrator. Before his appointment, he served as Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Maiduguri and held several other key administrative positions.

Earlier, the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Professor Maimuna Waziri, thanked the university community for the cooperation she received during her tenure and urged staff and students to extend the same support to her successor.

She then handed over the instruments of office to Geidam, symbolising the completion of her tenure.

The ceremony was attended by principal officers, members of management, deans, directors, heads of departments, staff, students, and other dignitaries.
