Many international agreements undermine Africa’s interests – Falana

Renowned human rights lawyer, Mr Femi Falana (SAN), has said that many international agreements imposed on Africa undermine the continent’s interests.

Falana subsequently “Warned African leaders to be more cautious in signing international agreements, so as not to mortgage the future of the continent.”

He spoke at the International  Conference on Law and Career organised by the Law Students Society of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, on Friday.

He said, “Many of the deals perpetuate neocolonialism,” calling on African legal practitioners to scrutinise them thoroughly.”

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, who was represented by his deputy, Kola Adewusi, in his remarks, lauded the leadership of OAU LSS for organising the conference.

In his remarks, the President, OAU LSS, Kayode Taiwo, explained that the conference was organised to shape the next generation of Nigeria’s legal elite and to ignite a change.

Taiwo further said his administration had recorded remarkable achievements, particularly facilitating a paid legal internship scheme for LSS members as a form of economic empowerment and training opportunities at the same time.

He commended the Dean, Faculty of Law of the university, Prof. Adewole Adedeji, lecturers and staff, for working hard to nurture the students to be the best in the legal profession.

During the conference, the 37th edition of OAU LSS international journal, known as the ‘Advocate’, which was published in honour of Professor Abiola Sanni, was unveiled officially.
