Lagos upgrades Takwa Bay PHC to improve coastal healthcare
The Lagos State Government has inaugurated a renovated Primary Health Centre in Takwa Bay, Iru-Victoria Island Local Council Development Area, as part of efforts to strengthen access to quality healthcare for residents of riverine communities.
The upgraded facility was inaugurated recently, with officials stating that the project was aimed at expanding essential health services to underserved coastal populations and advancing universal health coverage across the state.
Speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary, Health District III, Monsurat Adeleke, said the project reflected the government’s commitment to ensuring inclusive healthcare delivery for all residents.
She said, “No resident is left behind in access to quality healthcare service delivery.”
Adeleke explained that the initiative was designed to bring critical medical services closer to communities in remote coastal areas, adding that a large-scale medical outreach was organised alongside the inauguration to provide immediate care for residents.
According to her, the outreach included hypertension and diabetes screening, testing for syphilis, hepatitis B, HIV and malaria, as well as urinalysis, dental checks with extraction, blindness prevention screening with free corrective glasses and prostate cancer screening.
She also identified poor health-seeking behaviour among residents as a major challenge and urged community members to take full advantage of the services available at the upgraded centre.
The Chairman of Iru Victoria Island Local Council Development Area, Aminat Alabi, said the project demonstrated the administration’s dedication to improving the welfare of residents through strategic infrastructure development.
“As part of this intervention, we have successfully installed a 24-hour solar power system and constructed a four-bedroom en-suite staff quarters.
“This project strongly aligns with our administrative goals, particularly in the case of healthcare service delivery,” she said.
Alabi noted that the improved facility would enhance medical service delivery in Takwa Bay and support the broader objective of strengthening primary healthcare across the state.
The inauguration forms part of ongoing efforts by the Lagos State Government to expand healthcare infrastructure, particularly in hard-to-reach communities, and ensure residents have access to timely and affordable medical services.
