Lagos pledges stronger support for inclusive education

The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening inclusive education, saying it remains focused on ensuring that every child, regardless of ability, has access to quality education and the opportunity to realise their full potential.

The government stated this on Tuesday while highlighting a visit by a student of Sango Senior Secondary (Inclusive) School, Sango-Ota, Michael Oluwadamilare, who presented a portrait of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Mrs Abisola Dokunmu-Adegbite.

The presentation took place at the ministry’s headquarters in Alausa, Ikeja, on Monday.

This commitment was underscored during a memorable visit by the student of Sango Senior Secondary (Inclusive) School, Sango-Ota, Michael Oluwadamilare, who presented a beautifully crafted portrait of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Mrs. Abisola Dokunmu-Adegbite, to the Ministry at Alausa-Ikeja, Lagos, on Monday, 20th July, 2026.”

The government said the artwork bore a striking resemblance to the Permanent Secretary and drew admiration from those present, reflecting the student’s artistic ability.

It stated, “The remarkable artwork bore an impressive resemblance to the Permanent Secretary, drawing admiration from everyone present and showcasing the student’s exceptional artistic talent.”

The statement noted that the student’s presentation demonstrated that physical or learning challenges should not be viewed as barriers to achievement.

It said, “The presentation served as a powerful reminder that disability does not define a person’s potential. Rather, it highlighted the enduring truth that there are always abilities in disabilities.”

“The student’s creativity, dedication, and skill demonstrated that with the right support and encouragement, learners with disabilities can excel and make meaningful contributions to society.”

Receiving the portrait, Dokunmu-Adegbite commended the student for the artwork and praised the teachers and management of the school for nurturing the talents of learners in an inclusive environment.

Reaffirming the state’s commitment to inclusive learning, the government said, “She further stressed that inclusive education is central to the State’s vision of leaving no child behind and ensuring that all students, irrespective of their physical, sensory, or learning challenges, receive the support they need to succeed.”

The government described the presentation as evidence of the impact of inclusive education, stating, “The inspiring presentation by the student stands as a testament to the transformative power of inclusive education and reinforces the belief that when children are given equal opportunities, they can achieve extraordinary things.

The Lagos State Government remains steadfast in its resolve to invest in inclusive education and empower every learner to become a productive and valued member of society.”

Inclusive education has remained a key component of the Lagos State Government’s education policy, with investments in specialised learning facilities, teacher training and support services aimed at integrating learners with disabilities into mainstream education while enabling them to maximise their potential.
