Kano to recruit 17,600 guards for public school security

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved the immediate recruitment of 17,600 security guards across the state as part of a move to enhance safety in public schools.
The directive was announced on Monday in a statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Tofa.
Speaking at an official event in Kano, Governor Yusuf revealed that 400 security personnel would be deployed in each of the state’s 44 local government areas.
The initiative, he explained, aims to protect the lives of students and teachers and guarantee a secure learning environment.
This decision reflects our administration’s commitment to protecting our children and teachers from emerging security threats,” the governor said. “We cannot allow fear or insecurity to disrupt the education of our future leaders.”
The newly recruited guards will receive training and be stationed strategically to secure school gates, observe suspicious activities, and collaborate with relevant security agencies where necessary.
The initiative is part of broader education reforms under the Yusuf administration. Other measures include the solarization of 200 public schools, distribution of instructional materials, and plans to permanently employ qualified staff under the Better Education Service Delivery for All programme.
Governor Yusuf reaffirmed that security, education, and youth empowerment remain foundational pillars of his administration.
He called on parents, traditional rulers, and community leaders to support ongoing efforts to ensure safe and quality education for all children in the state.
