Glo, Imo govt sign digital deal

Telecommunications giant, Globacom, has signed an internet connectivity agreement with the Imo State Ministry of Digital Economy and e-Governance.

The deal, according to a statement shared with Saturday PUNCH, marks a significant step toward the state’s vision of building a fully digital economy and developing a Smart City in Owerri, the state capital.

Described as the largest single fixed internet connectivity project ever undertaken by the Globacom Enterprise Business Group, the deal positions the company as a key driver of advanced digital infrastructure and next-generation solutions across Nigeria.

Under the agreement, Globacom will deliver “high-capacity internet connectivity” to critical institutions and strategic projects within the state. These include the Owerri Smart City project—comprising 15 mega buildings—the Ministry of Digital Economy and e-Governance, and the Imo State University for Innovation, Science and Technology (formerly Imo State Polytechnic).

The company disclosed that its Glo-1 submarine cable system would serve as the backbone of the project. The privately owned fibre optic network connects Nigeria directly to Europe, providing high bandwidth, secure access, and robust capacity required to drive the state’s digital transformation agenda and enhance public service delivery.

Globacom said the partnership underscores its commitment to fostering socio-economic development, boosting digital inclusion, and strengthening connectivity across Nigeria.

The company, as quoted in the statement, said, “We are honoured by the confidence reposed in Globacom by the Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodinma, and his team. This partnership is a testament to our technical capability, nationwide coverage, and proven efficiency in delivering enterprise-grade connectivity solutions.

We will work closely with the state’s technical team to ensure timely delivery of the project and support Imo’s vision of a thriving digital economy.”

The telecommunications provider also commended the Imo State Government’s commitment to digital expansion, youth empowerment, and technology-driven governance. It noted that the state’s investments in digital infrastructure and innovation-focused programmes would spur job creation, encourage technological advancement, and promote sustainable economic growth.

“Imo State is setting a remarkable example for other states in Nigeria by leveraging technology to improve governance, education, and business efficiency. We applaud the governor’s focus on empowering the youth and building an innovation-driven economy. This partnership aligns perfectly with Globacom’s mission to power Nigeria’s digital future,” it added.
