Ghana mandates health declaration for travellers from Thursday

All travellers arriving in Ghana will be required to complete a mandatory health declaration form from Thursday, November 12, 2026, the country’s Health Service has announced.

The Ghana Health Service said all passengers travelling to the country must complete and submit the online form before embarking on their journeys.

The directive was contained in a press release dated November 7 and signed by the Director-General of the GHS, Dr Samuel Kaba Akoriyea.

The service said the requirement followed a recent announcement by the country’s Minister of Health

“In line with this directive, all passengers travelling to Ghana will be required to complete the Health Declaration Form before embarking on their journey to Ghana,” the statement said.

Travellers are required to complete the form through the GHS electronic health declaration portal before departure.

The service said the measure was intended to strengthen Ghana’s public health surveillance and preparedness systems, enhance the monitoring of potential public health risks, and safeguard the health and well-being of residents and visitors

It urged all prospective travellers to complete and submit the form before departure, while asking airlines, travel agencies and other relevant stakeholders to inform passengers about the new requirement.

The announcement comes amid the spread of the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola across parts of Africa, including the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya and Nigeria.

According to the World Health Organisation, the Democratic Republic of the Congo continues to record sustained transmission of the disease, while Kenya and Nigeria have also reported imported cases.

Nigeria reported one laboratory-confirmed imported case on October 20. The patient was subsequently evacuated to Switzerland for medical treatment, while health authorities identified 62 contacts for follow-up as of November 3.

Although the Ghana Health Service did not specifically link its November 7 announcement to the Ebola outbreak, Ghana had earlier introduced enhanced health screening and monitoring measures at its international airports amid the outbreak.
