Frank Lampard ‘pleased’ with Onyeka’s Coventry debut

Frank Onyeka marked his first appearance for Coventry City in style, earning glowing praise from manager Frank Lampard after a commanding display in the Sky Blues’ 3–1 win over Middlesbrough.

Making his long-awaited debut at the Coventry Building Society Arena, the Nigerian midfielder slotted seamlessly into the heart of the team’s midfield. Onyeka, who arrived on loan from Brentford in the January transfer window, had seen his introduction delayed due to the birth of his child. But there was no sign of rustiness as he imposed himself physically and tactically from the outset.

Strong in duels, sharp in pressing and composed in possession, Onyeka provided balance and bite to Coventry’s midfield. Even after picking up a first-half yellow card, he maintained discipline and intensity, helping his side manage the game effectively against a Middlesbrough team that had spells of control.

Lampard did not hide his satisfaction after the final whistle.

“He was outstanding,” the former Chelsea midfielder said. “His timing in pressing, his strength in challenges and the quality he showed on the ball were top level. For someone stepping into that kind of match for his debut, it was a big performance. I’m very pleased with him.”

While Onyeka anchored the midfield, it was Haji Wright who supplied the goals. The American forward struck a superb hat-trick to propel Coventry back to the summit of the Championship table. He opened the scoring in the first half, doubled the advantage shortly after the break and wrapped up the victory from the penalty spot late on.

Middlesbrough managed a response through Riley McGree, but Coventry never looked rattled. Onyeka’s assured presence in midfield was evident until his substitution in the 75th minute, when he left the pitch to warm applause from the home supporters.

With Coventry climbing back to the top and new signings settling quickly, Lampard’s side appear to be gathering momentum at a crucial stage of the season.
