Farmer collapses as fire burns his N16m yam barn

A 56-year -old farmer, Malam Baba Audu, reportedly collapsed after his yam storage worth over N16 million got burnt at Rafin-Daji community in Gurdi ward of Abaji Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory.
A resident of Rafin-Daji, Shuaibu Aliyu, said the incident happened on Wednesday around 11am when the fire gutted heaps of yam stored at the backyard of the farmer’s house.
He said the farmer and his family members had gone to the farm to clear land ahead of the anticipated rainy season when the incident happened.
He said upon getting the information that his yam store had been gutted by fire, the farmer rushed back home and collapsed after seeing the damages caused by the fire.
He said it took the intervention of some neighbours, who poured water on him before he could be revived, adding that some of the villagers mobilized buckets of water to put out the fire.
He said, “Nobody can say what could be the cause of the fire because no one was at home when the incident happened. The man, his two wives and children had gone to the farm when the fire gutted the yam store.”
Aliyu said the man was making arrangements to mobilize a trailer after the Ramadan fasting to take the yam to the market in Warri, Delta State before the fire burnt down all the yams.
He added, “You know the man is a renowned farmer, who is into farming a yam on large hectares of land. After harvest, he often takes them to the South/East to sell every year.’’
