Bus stop renaming doesn’t matter to me – Charly Boy

Veteran entertainer and activist, Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has reacted to the recent removal of his name from a bus stop in Lagos State, saying he remains unbothered by the development.
Speaking during an interview on Channel Television’s Morning Briefing on Tuesday, Charly Boy stated that he is indifferent about the decision to rename the bus stop, which was previously named in his honour by local residents.
He said, “It doesn’t matter to me. Anyone who has done something meaningful for their community can take the shine.
“I’m indifferent. That’s not our priority right now.”
The controversial figure added that Nigerians should focus on more important national issues, especially the need for electoral reforms and credible elections.
There are bigger things we should be concerned about—like making sure that come 2024, our votes count. That’s what the indicators are pointing to, and that’s what we should all be focused on,” he said.
Charly Boy, also dismissed suggestions that he felt slighted by the move, reiterating that legacy goes beyond public structures or symbolic honours.
The bus stop, which was unofficially referred to by some residents as “Charly Boy Bus Stop” in recognition of his contributions to civic activism, was renamed “Badoo Bus Stop” on Saturday by the outgoing Chairman of Bariga Local Council Development Area, Kolade Alabi.
The renaming has sparked mixed reactions among residents and online commentators, with some questioning the transparency and motive behind the change, while others say it reflects the dynamic nature of community recognition.
