Bauchi varsity gets NUC approval for new academic programmes
The Bauchi State-owned Sa’adu Zungur University has disclosed that it has secured approval from the National Universities Commission for 12 new undergraduate and postgraduate academic programmes, scheduled to commence in the 2026/2027 academic session.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Auwal Hassan.
According to the statement, the approval was conveyed in a letter dated June 15, 2026, following a comprehensive resource assessment conducted by the commission to evaluate the university’s readiness in terms of academic staff, physical infrastructure, library resources, laboratories and other facilities required to run the proposed programmes.
“The newly approved undergraduate programmes are B.A. (Ed.) Arabic, B.A. (Ed.) Hausa, B.A. (Ed.) Islamic Studies, B.A. Sharia, B.Sc. Social Work, B.Sc. (Ed.) Agricultural Science, B.Sc. (Ed.) Human Kinetics and B.Sc. (Ed.) Health Education,” the statement read in parts.
It continued, “The postgraduate programmes approved include M.Ed. Educational Management, Doctor of Business Administration, Postgraduate Diploma, LL.M. and Ph.D. Law, as well as Postgraduate Diploma, M.Sc. and Ph.D. Sociology.”
The statement also revealed that in response to the development, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Fatimah Tahir, described the approval as a strong endorsement of the institution’s commitment to academic excellence, institutional growth and compliance with the regulatory standards of the NUC.
She said the introduction of the new programmes aligns with the university’s strategic vision of expanding access to quality higher education, promoting research and innovation, and producing graduates equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to address contemporary national and global challenges.
Tahir expressed appreciation to the NUC for its confidence in the university’s capacity to deliver the approved programmes, assuring that the institution would maintain the standards upon which the approvals were granted.
She also thanked the Governor of Bauchi State and Visitor to the university, Bala Mohammed, for his continued support for higher education through sustained investment in infrastructure, academic development and institutional support.
The vice-chancellor further commended the university’s Governing Council, Senate, management, academic and non-academic staff for their dedication and collective efforts which ensured the successful outcome of the resource assessment exercise.
She assured prospective students, parents and other stakeholders that the university would provide the necessary human and material resources for the effective implementation of the newly approved programmes in line with the NUC’s quality assurance guidelines.
According to her, “the approval reinforces Sa’adu Zungur University’s position as one of Nigeria’s emerging public universities committed to academic excellence, impactful research, innovation and community service.
“The university remains steadfast in its mission of producing competent graduates, advancing knowledge through research and contributing meaningfully to the socioeconomic development of Bauchi State, Nigeria and the global community,” Tahir said.
