Aspiring Indian model commits suicide after husband called her ‘monkey’

A 23-year-old woman died by suicide in Lucknow’s Indiranagar area after becoming upset over a remark made by her husband during a family conversation, Uttar Pradesh Police said.

The deceased, India Today reports, was identified as Tannu Singh, who lived with her husband, Rahul Srivastava, an auto-rickshaw driver, in the Takrohi locality of Indiranagar

According to reports citing police and family accounts, the incident occurred on Wednesday evening after the family returned home from visiting relatives in Sitapur. While sitting together and engaging in light-hearted banter, Rahul reportedly referred to Tannu as a “monkey” (or “bandariya” in Hindi), which deeply distressed her. She then left the room quietly.

Rahul later went out to fetch food. Upon his return, he asked Tannu’s sister, Anjali, to call her. When there was no response and the door was found locked from inside, Anjali looked through a window and saw Tannu hanging from a noose made of cloth. She raised an alarm, and neighbors along with Rahul broke open the door, brought her down, and rushed her to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead.

Police arrived at the scene, took the body into custody, and conducted a post-mortem examination. The body was later handed over to the family. Authorities stated that no formal written complaint has been filed so far, and the matter remains under investigation.

Family members said Tannu and Rahul had entered into a love marriage about four years ago, which was later accepted by both families. The couple had no children. Tannu was passionate about modeling and aspired to pursue a career in the field.

Police have described the incident as a case of suicide triggered by emotional distress from the remark, though investigations continue to ascertain full circumstances.
