Akpoti-Uduaghan’s actions embarrassed us’ – Women groups apologise to Akpabio

ABUJA – The Nigerian Women Crusade for Good Governance (NWCGG), representing 100 women’s groups, has publicly apologised to Senate President Godswill Akpabio and the Nigerian Senate regarding allegations made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
The group expressed concern that the senator’s behaviour has embarrassed Nigerian women and undermined the efforts of female politicians.
The apology was issued during a press conference in Abuja. Dr Mrs Cecilia Ikechukwu, speaking on behalf of the NWCGG, stated that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s actions were inconsistent with the values of responsible leadership. She emphasised the need for female politicians to uphold professionalism in their roles.
The NWCGG commended Senate President Akpabio for his commitment to good governance and support for women’s inclusion in politics. They urged Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan to use her six-month suspension to reflect on her conduct, study the Senate rules, and prepare to return to her duties with a renewed sense of responsibility.
The group highlighted the importance of maintaining integrity and respect in public office, stressing that one individual’s actions should not overshadow the achievements of other women in Nigerian politics. They called on Nigerians to continue supporting good governance and holding leaders accountable.
Ikechukwu stated, “We strongly condemn Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s behaviour, which we find disruptive, crude, and distasteful. Her actions have embarrassed Nigerian women and undermined the efforts of female politicians who have worked hard to gain the trust and respect of Nigerians.
“We must not allow one individual’s actions to define the collective achievements of women in leadership. We urge Senator Natasha to seek professional help, as it is clear she is struggling with deep-seated issues that need addressing if she is to function effectively in any leadership role.
“Furthermore, she should take this opportunity to read and understand the Senate rules, so that upon her return, she can conduct herself with the dignity and respect befitting her office.
“We commend Senate President Akpabio for his commitment to good governance and support for women’s inclusion in politics. We apologise to Nigerians for the embarrassment caused by Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s behaviour and pledge to continue advocating for women’s leadership and good governance.
We must demonstrate that women in governance are capable, respectable, and deserving of leadership positions. We hope Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan will use this period of suspension to rebuild her character and emerge as a more responsible and respectful leader.
Finally, we call on all Nigerians to remain steadfast in their support for good governance and to hold their leaders accountable for their actions. May this unfortunate episode serve as a lesson on the importance of character, maturity, and responsible leadership.”
The NWCGG further reaffirmed its dedication to advocating for women’s leadership and equality in Nigeria, emphasising that women in governance must inspire confidence and serve as role models for future generations.
