70-year-old Jigawa man kills sister over inheritance

A 70-year-old man, Adamu Yakubu, has been arrested by the police in Jigawa State for allegedly killing his 45-year-old sister, Hannatu Hashimu, during a dispute over family inheritance.

The incident occurred in Galadanchi village, Dutse Local Government Area, around 3:30 pm on Monday, July 1, 2025, according to the police.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer, in the state, Shi’isu Adam, said the suspect allegedly struck his sister with a stick during a heated altercation.

“The suspect allegedly hit his sister with a stick during a heated argument over the sharing of family inheritance land,” the police spokesperson said.

According to Adam, the argument started verbally but quickly turned physical.

After the attack, Hannatu reportedly left the scene in distress, collapsed upon reaching her matrimonial home, and was rushed to the Dutse General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Adam confirmed that the suspect had been arrested and was in custody, helping investigators with the case.

He said the weapon used in the assault had been recovered and kept as an exhibit, adding that Yakubu would be charged to court after the investigation.
