253 former drug addicts reunited with families after recovery in Herat

A total of 253 individuals struggling with drug addiction have reunited with their families after undergoing medical treatment and rehabilitation in Herat province, western Afghanistan, the country’s Ministry of Interior Affairs announced.

According to a statement posted on the ministry’s official X account on Monday, all the individuals were originally from various parts of Herat and had been admitted to local rehabilitation centres several months ago.

They have now fully recovered and returned home.

While there are no official statistics on the number of drug users in Afghanistan, estimates suggest that more than three million people in the country suffer from drug addiction.

As part of a broader effort to combat drug abuse, the Afghan interim government has banned poppy cultivation and narcotics trafficking across the country.
