17-year-old boy dies after stick attack at Yobe wedding

A teenager, Ishaku Idriss, has died after being hit with a stick during a clash among youths at a wedding ceremony in Potiskum Local Government Area of Yobe State.

learnt from a counterinsurgency commentator, Zagazola Makama, on Tuesday that the incident occurred on March 31 at about 1pm.

According to Makama, the clash reportedly involved youths from Dagare and Yabel villages and escalated into a physical confrontation.

Makama noted that sources revealed the altercation began after a 16-year-old boy, Adamu Suleh, allegedly assaulted the victim with a stick following an instigation involving one Shuaibu Yusuf.

The victim was said to have retaliated during the clash, leading to further violence.

“The altercation escalated after Adamu Suleh, 16, of Dagare village, allegedly assaulted Ishaku Idriss, 17, of Yabel village, with a stick following an instigation involving one Shuaibu Yusuf, 27.

“In the course of the fight, the victim attacked another boy, Usman Inusa, 14, who struck him on the head with a stick, causing him to collapse,” Makama wrote.

He added that Idriss was initially taken to the State Specialist Hospital in Potiskum before being transferred to the Yobe State University Teaching Hospital in Damaturu

The post noted that the victim was, however, confirmed dead on April 4, 2026, at about 4:00 am.

“He was initially rushed to the State Specialist Hospital, Potiskum, before being transferred to the Yobe State University Teaching Hospital, Damaturu, where he was confirmed dead on April 4, 2026, at about 4:00 am.

“Police authorities said the case was reported by the village head of Jumma’a Bogocho, Ahmadu Yusuf, at the Potiskum Police Division.

“The suspects involved in the incident have been arrested, while investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the clash,” he concluded.

Efforts to get the reaction of the state Police Public Relations Officer, Dungus Abdulkarim, proved abortive, as he had yet to respond to an enquiry sent to him as of the time of filing this report.
