Chairmen of the nine local government councils in Ogun East Senatorial District have declared support for Governor Dapo Abiodun, endorsing him as their consensus candidate for the Ogun East Senatorial seat ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The endorsement was announced at the Ogun East Caucus meeting, where the council leaders cited what they described as the governor’s significant infrastructural and developmental achievements across the district.

Speaking on behalf of the chairmen, Hon. Afolabi Odulate (Sagamu), Hon. Folusho Badejo (Ijebu North East), Otunba Muyiwa Sodade (Remo North), and Hon. Jamiu Ashimi (Ikenne) said their position reflected a shared confidence in Abiodun’s leadership and future political prospects.

Odulate highlighted projects such as the Ijebu-Ode Dry Port, Tongeji Oil Well and the proposed Deep Seaport in Ogun Waterside, describing them as strategic investments capable of transforming the economic fortunes of Ogun East.

Badejo praised the governor’s administration for delivering projects many residents once considered unrealistic, including the state airport and major road infrastructure. He also alluded to what he described as the emergence of a capable successor in “Yayi.”

Sodade stressed the need for continuity in governance, saying stakeholders must rally behind purposeful leadership rather than hinder progress. He added that Abiodun’s relationship with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu could enhance effective representation for the district at the national level.

Ashimi described the endorsement as a landmark moment for Ikenne Local Government, noting that it could mark the first time an indigene of the area would occupy the Ogun East Senate seat.

Also speaking, Hon. Bolaji Odusanya of Ijebu North Local Government described the governor as an Omoluabi with strong emotional intelligence, adding that his administration has promoted unity, stability and development across the senatorial district.

The chairmen said their endorsement was based on satisfaction with the governor’s performance and confidence in his capacity to represent Ogun East effectively in the Senate if elected in 2027.

Belgium is set to fully digitise its short-term work permit and commuter permit application process from May 1, 2026, in a major administrative overhaul aimed at modernising how foreign worker documentation is handled.

In a joint official communiqué released on April 17, 2026, on its website, by Belgium’s Federal Immigration Office and cited by PUNCH Online on Monday, under the new system, employers and authorised representatives will be required to submit all applications exclusively through the country’s official online portal, replacing the long-standing email-based submission process.

The change is expected to affect short-term work permits typically issued for non-EU professionals undertaking assignments such as technical support, business visits, training, or equipment installation, usually lasting up to 90 days.

Authorities say the shift is designed to improve efficiency, reduce administrative errors, and eliminate delays caused by incomplete or misplaced email submissions. By centralising applications on a digital platform, officials will be able to track submissions more accurately, verify documents faster, and streamline processing times.

The new system will require employers to register on the government’s online portal and obtain valid digital credentials before submitting applications. Officials have warned that failure to set up access in advance could lead to processing delays once the system becomes mandatory.

“A temporary transition arrangement has been introduced in the Wallonia region, where email submissions will still be accepted until August 31, 2026. However, no similar grace period has been confirmed for Flanders or the Brussels-Capital Region, where full compliance with the online system is expected by the May deadline,” the statement noted.

The reform is part of Belgium’s broader push to modernise its immigration and labour administration systems, aligning with wider European trends toward fully digital public service delivery.

Once implemented, the policy will mark the end of email-based submissions for these categories, representing one of the most significant changes to Belgium’s work permit application process in recent years.

The Lagos Waste Management Authority has called on residents to fully comply with the state’s monthly environmental sanitation exercise, scheduled to resume on Saturday, April 25, 2026.

In a statement issued via its official X handle on Monday, the agency said the exercise will hold from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. across Lagos State.

LAWMA reminded residents that the two-hour window is dedicated to cleaning surroundings and ensuring proper waste disposal across the state.

“Monthly sanitation exercise commences on Saturday 25th April from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. across the state.

This is a reminder that sanitation is everyone’s responsibility. Residents are encouraged to clean their surroundings, dispose waste properly, and support efforts to keep our environment clean and safe.

“Together, we can achieve a cleaner and more livable Lagos,” the statement read.

PUNCH Online reports that the state government in March announced the resumption of the exercise, nearly a decade after it was suspended.

“I am pleased to inform all Lagosians that the monthly environmental sanitation exercise will resume effective Saturday, 25th April 2026, holding on the last Saturday of every month from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m,” the state Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said.

Previously held between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m., the initiative was suspended in November 2016 following a legal pronouncement restricting movement during the exercise.

Following the reintroduction, some Lagos State residents expressed excitement, saying it will curb indiscriminate waste disposal, reduce flooding, and restore cleanliness across the state.

Speaking with PUNCH Healthwise, they stated that they were willing to participate in the exercise to help restore Lagos’s cleanliness and reduce unpleasant odours.

However, some raised concerns about how the exercise would be enforced.

They warned that movement restrictions could be misused by law enforcement officials for extortion and emphasised the importance of pairing the initiative with re-education on proper waste disposal, rather than relying solely on monthly activities.

Some retired Police officers and their families on Monday in Abuja, warned President Bola Tinubu that he risks losing the votes of police retirees scattered across all 36 states if he fails to sign the Police Exit Bill removing the force from the Contributory Pension Scheme.

They gave the warning when gathered in protest, blockading Gate 8 leading to the Presidential Villa in Abuja from about 10:00 am to 1:00pm local time.

Leading the protest, the National Coordinator of the Police Retired Officers Forum of Nigeria, CSP Raphael Irowainu (retd.), said the millions of retirees scattered nationwide will use their votes judiciously.

Irowainu said, “We are calling on President Bola Tinubu to sign our bill as a matter of urgency. He should know that in Nigeria, we are very serious stakeholders. Retirees are scattered all over Nigeria.

We will use our votes judiciously and those of our families to determine our future in the coming elections. From Zamfara, Maiduguri to Cross River, we are in thousands among the populace.”

“When in service, they kill us. We who survived and managed to retire, they programme us to die again. Many of us retire with disabilities and sickness. Many of us here have bullets in our bodies in the course of our duty.

“Unless the President fixes the problems of the police, internal security problems will not stop. We are the force closest to the people.”

He said the protesters will continue in the coming days.

“We will remain in Abuja until that bill is signed. We will protest at the airport, US embassy, we will cry out until this bill is signed,” said Irowainu.

Protesters on Monday carried placards reading “End CPS” and “If military, DSS were removed from PENCOM, why not police?” while chanting “Police dey work, PenCom dey chop.”

According to a Villa security personnel who spoke to our correspondent at the scene of the protest, the retirees were asked to remain under a tree and air their grievances even as the gates were shut based on “orders from above”.

The protesters, operating under the aegis of Police Retired Officers Forum, described the CPS as “fraudulent, illegal, inhumane and obnoxious,” and called for immediate presidential assent to the Police Exit Bill.

The bill was passed by the National Assembly on December 4, 2025, and transmitted to the Presidency on March 16, 2026.

It has since awaited the President’s signature.

The bill, sponsored by House Leader Hon. Julius Ihonvbere, seeks to establish a Nigerian Police Force Pension Board and exempt the police from the Contributory Pension Scheme under the Pension Reform Act 2014.

Irowainu lamented that all other major security agencies had already been removed from the scheme.

He said, “The soldiers have been exited, the SSS has been exited, the Air Force has been exited, the Navy has been exited, the National Intelligence Agency has been exited.

The police, who are the fathers of them all, are trapped in this obnoxious Contributory Pension Scheme.”

The National Coordinating Secretary for Retired Police Officers Under the CPS, CSP Mannir Zaria (retd.), told our correspondent that the women and families who turned out for the protest came to amplify a welfare crisis that had gone ignored for too long.

“We are here to appeal to the President to sign the bill to exit the police from the contributory pension scheme and to establish a Nigerian Police Force pension body. That is why we are here,” he said.

Wife of a retired officer, Aisha Yisa, who spoke to journalists, said the protest was deeply personal.

We are begging our President. We are appealing to you, please have mercy on us. Have mercy on our children. Have mercy on our wives. Have mercy on our husbands. He retired after 35 years and there is nothing to go home with.

“You can imagine someone retires and is taking N30,000 a month in today’s Nigerian economy. What can N30,000 buy? Medication? Nothing.

“You go to the market, you can’t buy anything. Our children have been dropping out of school. Please, we are appealing to you.”

The PUNCH obtained a copy of a letter of protest presented to the Villa, signed by Irowainu and National Secretary Dr Nnaemezie Ignatius Enyi (retd.).

The letter laid out in detail the pension payouts that retirees currently receive.

A Chief Superintendent of Police, it stated, collects a lump sum of N3m to N4m and a monthly pension of N50,000 after decades of service.

It said an Assistant Superintendent receives a lump sum of N1.5m to N2m and a monthly pension of N25,000.

An Inspector takes home a lump sum of N1m to N1m and N20,000 monthly.

The group described these figures as “inhumanity of man to man,” and accused the management of the National Pension Commission of deliberately spreading what it called false economic arguments to prevent the bill’s passage and protect financial interests tied to the scheme.

The group warned in the letter that if the President declined to sign the bill, they were “ready and fully prepared for an indefinite National Peaceful Protest tagged ‘No Retreat, No Surrender’” at the Presidential Villa, other designated venues in Abuja and throughout all 36 state capitals.

Monday’s protest is not the first escalation over the issue. In September 2025, retired officers besieged the National Assembly in Abuja, describing the CPS as a fraudulent arrangement designed to keep them in poverty.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio had at one point assured the retirees that the policy was “not well thought out” and had placed undue hardship on police personnel who risked their lives to secure the country.

The letter was copied to Vice President Kashim Shettima, First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, Minister of Defence Gen. Christopher Musa (retd.), Minister of Police Affairs Sen. Ibrahim Gaidam, FCT Minister Nyesome Wike, National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu, and DSS Director-General Adeola Ajayi.

The Niger Police Command has foiled an armed robbery attack in Minna and recovered a locally made pistol and other exhibits, while also arresting a female suspect for alleged possession of cannabis, the Command has said.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Wasiu Abiodun, on Monday.

According to the statement, a report was received at Tudun-Wada Division on April 19, 2026, at about 9:00 a.m. regarding a robbery incident at the Sauka-Kahuta area in Minna.

Preliminary investigations revealed that at about 2:30 a.m. on the same day, a gang of six armed men, carrying a gun and cutlasses, invaded a residential building in the area.

The suspects were said to have dispossessed an occupant of two mobile phones after breaking into the house. However, the operation was disrupted when one of the occupants resisted the attackers and inflicted an injury on one of the suspects with a cutlass.

Following the resistance, the gang reportedly fled the scene in disarray, abandoning several items.

Abiodun said, “The suspects quickly fled the scene, abandoning a locally made pistol, a cutlass, a pair of slippers, and a flashlight.”

Police operatives, led by the Divisional Police Officer, later visited the scene where the abandoned exhibits were recovered.

The Command confirmed that efforts are ongoing to track down the fleeing suspects and recover the stolen phones.

In a separate operation, the Command also confirmed the arrest of a female suspect for alleged drug-related offences.

Abiodun stated that on April 10, 2026, at about 3:30 p.m., operatives attached to ‘B’ Division, Kontagora, arrested one Rukayya Mohammed, 28, of Barracks Gate area, Kontagora.

She was reportedly intercepted during a stop-and-search operation around Kawo village with a polythene bag containing suspected cannabis.

“The suspect was arrested with a polythene bag containing some quantity of suspected cannabis. She confessed that she sells to members of the public,” the statement partly read.

The police spokesperson added that the suspect has been charged to court, while investigations are ongoing to apprehend her alleged suppliers.

AFC Bournemouth have confirmed the appointment of Marco Rose as their new head coach on a three-year deal, with the German set to succeed Andoni Iraola at the end of the season.

The move brings an end to weeks of speculation over the club’s long-term direction, following confirmation that Iraola will leave this summer after deciding not to extend his contract.

In a statement obtained from the club’s website on Monday, Bournemouth said: “Marco Rose is an experienced and highly respected head coach with a proven record at the highest level of European football. We are delighted to appoint him as our new manager and believe he is the right fit to continue our progress.”

Rose, 49, arrives after leaving RB Leipzig in March 2025 and has previously managed Borussia Dortmund, Borussia Mönchengladbach and Red Bull Salzburg, where he earned a reputation for aggressive pressing systems and developing young talent.

Speaking after his appointment was confirmed, Rose said he was excited by the challenge of working in the Premier League

This is a fantastic club with a clear identity and ambition,” Rose said. “I’ve followed Bournemouth’s progress closely, and the energy around the team is very impressive. My goal is to build on what has already been achieved and help take the club to the next level.”

Iraola, who will remain in charge until the end of the campaign, also reflected on his time at the club.

“It has been a privilege to work at Bournemouth,” he said. “We have built something special together, and I’m proud of the way the players and staff have developed. For now, the focus is on finishing the season strongly.”

The club had reportedly considered several candidates, including Kieran McKenna of Ipswich Town and Inigo Perez of Rayo Vallecano, before settling on Rose due to his Champions League experience and track record of elevating teams competing above expectations.

Bournemouth are currently aiming to consolidate a strong Premier League campaign, with European qualification still within reach as the season enters its final stretch.

President Bola Tinubu has approved the establishment of a new campus of the Nigeria Police Academy in Erinja, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State, alongside a special take-off grant of N15bn to fund the facility’s development.

A statement signed on Monday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the approval fulfils the provisions of the Nigeria Police Academy (Establishment) Act, 2021, which empowers the institution to operate as a multi-campus university across the country.

“The intervention fund will be sourced from TETFund’s 2026 allocation and will finance priority infrastructure, academic facilities, student accommodation, and core training assets at the new campus,” the statement read.

According to Onanuga, the siting of the new campus in Erinja was recommended by a high-level consultative meeting that brought together the Minister of Police Affairs, the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, officials of the Federal Ministry of Education, the Inspector General of Police and the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission.

The meeting weighed student intake capacity, funding realities, academic quality assurance and the long-term training needs of the Nigerian Police Force, which is currently in the process of expanding its workforce through fresh recruitment.

The Presidency said Tinubu believes the expansion will “strengthen institutional governance, modern policing education and national security.”

The Nigeria Police Academy had operated only a single campus in Wudil, Kano State.

Section 3 of the Police Act empowers the Academy, under the oversight of its Governing Council, to “establish such campuses, colleges, faculties, institutions, schools and units within the Academy as may be necessary or desirable, subject to the approval of the National Universities Commission.”

In June 2025, the House of Representatives called for the decentralisation of the Academy’s operations, urging Tinubu and the Governing Council to give effect to the 2021 Act by establishing campuses in each of the country’s six geopolitical zones.

The Academy, which officially took off in 1988 at two temporary campuses—the Police Training School in Challawa, Kano and the Police College in Kaduna—was merged and relocated to its permanent site in Wudil in 1996, and was upgraded to a degree-awarding institution by the NUC in 2012, becoming Nigeria’s 37th federal university.

It currently offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in law enforcement and related disciplines, including law, sciences, social and management sciences, and humanities.

The new Ogun State campus will be the first satellite campus established under the 2021 Act.

Leaders and stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress in Ogun East Senatorial District have on Monday endorsed Governor Dapo Abiodun as their consensus candidate for the 2027 senatorial election.

The endorsement was announced at a well-attended gathering held at Adeola Odutola Hall in Ijebu-Ode, bringing together a broad coalition of party leaders and grassroots representatives from across the district.

The event, according to a statement made available to journalists by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Abiodun, Lekan Adeniran, drew members of the Governor’s Advisory Council, former and serving local government chairmen, past and present lawmakers at both state and national levels, councillors from all wards in the district, as well as women and youth leaders

The statement stated that those who attended the meeting were councillors across the senatorial district, all ward chairmen and executives; all local government chairmen and executives; serving members of the National Assembly and the State House of Assembly; past members of both the State and National Assembly; and members of the Elders Advisory Council.

Speaking during the meeting, former Ogun East senator, Lekan Mustapha, said the decision was driven by a shared conviction that Governor Abiodun possesses the capacity to represent the district effectively in the Senate.

Mustapha said that “Party leaders would formally communicate the endorsement to the governor, including a commitment to purchase his nomination forms for the 2027 election.

We will put a body together to deliver this message to our Governor that he has been adopted as the consensus candidate.”

He described Abiodun as a leader of strong character and sound intellect, and should therefore be given all the support to be in the Senate in 2027.

In his remarks, the Secretary to the State Government, Tokunbo Talabi, noted that the governor’s track record in governance and party cohesion make him deserving of the Senate seat.

Talabi reportedly said that “This endorsement is historic and unanimous. It reflects the collective belief that Prince Dapo Abiodun is the right person for the position”.

Also speaking, House of Representatives member, Femi Ogunbanwo, representing Odogbolu, Ijebu-Ode, and Ijebu North East Federal Constituency, said the governor’s administration has fostered peace and development across the state, expressing confidence that he would attract more dividends of democracy to Ogun East at the national level.

Chairman of Sagamu Local Government, Afolabi Odulate, commended the governor’s performance and reiterated the district’s collective appeal for him to accept the senatorial bid.

The event reportedly drew participation from all 103 councillors across the nine local governments in Ogun East, alongside youth leaders and key grassroots mobilisers.

Other top political leaders at the meeting included Sen Gbenga Kaka, Ogun East APC Chairman Adedoyin Adeleke, and respected party elders such as Kola Ogunjobi, Bayo Dayo, Durojaye, Pegba Otemolu, James Dina, and Osibote Amoran.

Also present were Femi Nuberu, the party’s Publicity Secretary, Adesola Elegbeji, Joseph Adegbesan, and Femi Ogunbanwo — members of the House of Representatives.

The Federal Capital Territory Administration has appealed to the Nigeria Union of Teachers, FCT Wing, to call off the indefinite strike embarked upon on Monday over unresolved welfare issues.

The Mandate Secretary, FCT Education Secretariat, Danlami Hayyo, made the appeal during an inspection tour of schools in the territory on Monday.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the NUT had on Friday directed primary and secondary school teachers in the FCT to begin an indefinite strike on Monday.

The union explained that the decision was due to the continued silence of the FCT Administration on the legitimate demands of teachers amid prevailing harsh economic realities in the country, particularly in the territory.

Hayyo, who appealed to the NUT to suspend the industrial action, described the timing as “psychologically demoralising” for students scheduled to begin the West African Examinations Council examinations on Tuesday.

He expressed concern over reports that union members were forcibly removing students and teachers from classrooms.

“I don’t think it is constitutionally right for the NUT to come and chase students out of the classrooms.

How can you expect your sons and daughters to write exams tomorrow when you are chasing them out today?

“This could lead to mass failure, and WAEC will not reschedule the examinations for FCT students alone,” he said.

He said that the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, had renovated over 100 schools and paid 40 per cent of teacher entitlements in 2025.

According to him, the bulk of the union’s current grievances are the responsibilities of the Local Education Authorities and Area Council Chairmen, and not the FCT Administration.

The Mandate Secretary urged union leaders to return to the bargaining table to avoid worsening the out-of-school children crisis in the territory.

“I am tired of this strike. If we continue to discourage these children now, they will retaliate when they become the leaders of tomorrow.

“I appeal to the NUT to set aside these interests and prioritise the future of our students,” he said.

NAN reports that the NUT had appreciated Wike for the implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage and payment of nine months’ arrears to primary school teachers in the FCT.

The union, however, decried the non-response to other outstanding demands of the teachers.

It noted that the Minister had constituted a committee on July 7, 2025, with a mandate to, within two weeks, harmonise all outstanding entitlements of primary school teachers.

“The committee was also directed to make appropriate recommendations that would lead to a permanent solution to the frequent industrial disputes involving FCT primary school teachers.

“The committee concluded its assignment and submitted its report in August 2025; however, the report is yet to be made public,” it said.

According to the union, some of the outstanding issues include the non-implementation and payment of 25 per cent and 35 per cent salary increment, and non-implementation and payment of 40 per cent peculiar allowance.

The South-West leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, on Monday, reaffirmed its total support for the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, as well as the Nigerian populace.

They called for unity in diversity, cautioning against attempts to inflame political tension ahead of the 2027 election for personal gain.

It’s Zonal Secretary, Sanya Atofarati, disclosed this during a press briefing held at the party’s zonal headquarters, Adagunodo House in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Monday.

Atofarati also reaffirmed the party’s loyalty to the National Working Committee under the leadership of Aminu Turaki.

Atofarati lauded his (Makinde) administration for delivering democratic dividends and strengthening institutions of governance.

He said, “Makinde has shown stability, focus, and an unwavering commitment to delivering democratic dividends, while also playing a significant role in sustaining and strengthening multi-party democracy in Nigeria.”

The party emphasised its readiness to offer what it described as a credible and people-driven alternative focused on stability, good governance and national development

He stated, “The South West Zonal Executive Committee unequivocally identifies with and stands firmly behind Governor Makinde, whose leadership continues to exemplify stability, focus, and commitment to the welfare of the people.

“Nigerians must not lose faith in democratic institutions despite present difficulties. PDP remains resolute in its commitment to people-focused governance, stability, and national progress, and stands firmly with citizens confronting hardship and uncertainty.”

The party dispelled speculation surrounding an alleged impeachment plan against the governor, insisting that no such process exists.

It described the claims as baseless and a deliberate attempt to stir political tension, adding that “the report is baseless and contrived. They formed part of a calculated attempt to generate unnecessary political tension.”

The PDP, therefore, criticised former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, over his comments, lamenting that the comments were harmful to public discourse.

Atofarati described his (Fayose) remarks as “irresponsible and self-serving, capable of inciting tension, particularly through the needless politicisation of revered traditional institutions. Such conduct is unacceptable and stands condemned.”

He further called on Nigerians to remain calm, vigilant and united, warning against “disgruntled political actors” seeking to manufacture crises or destabilise the country in pursuit of selfish political interests.

The reports that former Ekiti state governor, Ayodele Fayose, had earlier alleged that Governor Makinde was plotting to remove the Olubadan, a claim both the state government and the palace have repeatedly denied.

Fayose, in a post on his X handle, insisted that recent political developments were being misinterpreted as part of a wider plan targeting the monarch.

He said, “Those who are still in doubt, Governor Makinde’s plot to remove the Olubadan of Ibadan, Ladoja, should just keep their fingers crossed and follow unfolding events,” adding that counter-allegations against the monarch were part of an orchestration to justify action against him.

Liam Rosenior insists he has support from Chelsea’s owners despite an alarming slump that has dealt a huge blow to the club’s hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.

The Blues have fallen seven points behind fifth-placed Liverpool after four straight Premier League defeats and their chances of finishing in the top five look bleak.

Boos greeted the full-time whistle following Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Manchester United at Stamford Bridge after some supporters staged a street protest against owners BlueCo ahead of kick-off.

Chelsea co-owner Behdad Eghbali last week said the club were still behind Rosenior and remained optimistic about long-term success under his management.

Asked on Monday if felt that support, Blues head coach Rosenior, who replaced Enzo Maresca in January, said: “One hundred percent.

“They have been supportive of me in our daily conversations, they have been magnificent in their support of me and the team.

“We’re aligned that we know we need to win games of football in the now, but that doesn’t go against what we’re trying to do, which is give consistent success to this club long term.

Chelsea will attempt to halt their alarming slump at ninth-placed Brighton on Tuesday.

With just three points separating the Blues and Fulham in 12th, Rosenior’s side are in danger of missing out on European football altogether.

“We’ve made it very difficult for ourselves,” he said of their Champions League aspirations. “We have to be honest and realistic with that.

“But what we can’t do is give up. We have to keep fighting. We have to make sure we go to Brighton with similar attributes to what I saw against Manchester United in terms of our energy, our intensity and engagement to the game, which was good.

“But we didn’t keep a clean sheet and we didn’t take advantage of the chances, so we need to be more clinical and more ruthless in both boxes.”

The management of Bamidele Olumilua University of Education Science and Technology, Ikere Ekiti, has mourned the death of three persons in a stampede that occurred at a post-convocation party at a hotel in Ikere Ekiti.

The management, in a statement by the Registrar, Mrs Funmilola Adeusi, made available on Monday, expressed regret over the death of two graduates and a student in the unfortunate incident which occurred during a night party at a hotel in town.

Recall that BOUESTI held its second convocation ceremony on its campus on Saturday, following which some of the graduates and students organised a night party at the Emirate Hotel, where the stampede and the consequent loss of three lives happened.

Adeusi, in the statement, said, “Regrettably, we confirm that two of our graduands and one other student lost their lives in this tragic occurrence. Our hearts go out to the families, friends, and colleagues of the deceased during this profoundly difficult time.

The University community mourns this painful loss and sympathises with the family and friends of all those affected,” she stated.

The registrar, who clarified that the convocation proceedings were conducted peacefully, successfully and without any disruption, said, “The university remains committed to upholding the highest standards of safety, order and integrity in all its activities”.

BOUESTI, in response to reports described as unfounded, stated, “We wish to categorically state that no stampede or violent incident occurred at the convocation venue or within the university premises during or after the ceremony.”

Adeusi said that the unfortunate incident “took place at a private off-campus location, specifically at the Emirate Hotel, where some graduands independently organized a night party to celebrate their graduation. It was at the venue of the party that a fight reportedly broke out, leading to a stampede.”

The Ekiti State Police Command had on Sunday night stated that preliminary investigation showed that the incident occurred at about 1am at the Emirate Hotel on Sunday, during a stampede that followed a fight.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Ekiti State Command, Sunday Abutu, disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, Michael Falade, had ordered an investigation into the incident.

Nigerian content creator and streamer, Habeeb Hamzat, who is popularly known as Peller, has stirred widespread reactions after declaring that his ₦100 million savings remain strictly off-limits, even in the face of urgent family crises.

In a video currently making the rounds online featuring media personality Peller and skit maker Sir Balo and cited by PUNCH Online on Monday, has sparked conversations about money, savings, and financial discipline.

In the clip, Peller spoke about his strict approach to managing money, revealing that he maintains a personal standard of never considering himself “broke” below ₦100 million, regardless of the situation.

“I don’t ever allow myself to be broke below ₦100 million. Even if anybody wants to d+e in the family, I won’t touch it. I always make sure my money never drops below ₦100 million.

There are times I’ll need urgent money when I’m broke and I’ll just take music promotion and ask for like ₦3 million just to do it. But that saved 100million, I won’t touch it, because once you start, you’ll continue spending,” he said.

The remark has generated intense debate on social media platforms, with many weighing in on the balance between financial discipline and family responsibility.

Supporters argue that maintaining strict financial boundaries is necessary for long-term stability, especially in a challenging economic environment.

Critics, however, say the stance is too rigid and ignores the realities of family responsibility, particularly in emergencies where immediate financial intervention can be life-saving.

In Nigeria, family obligations often extend beyond immediate households, with individuals frequently expected to contribute to medical bills, education, and other urgent needs.

Peller’s statement challenges this norm, raising broader questions about sustainability and personal limits in a system where informal support networks often replace institutional safety nets.

One user with The Naija Narrative replied to the post saying, “So if fire catch house, una go first wait for ‘financial approval’ from Peller Finance Department.”

Another user said ‘Peller Okwu Juru gi Onu’, which means “Peller, your mouth is full of talk.”

A business executive and philanthropist, Remi Odunsi, has declared her intention to contest for the House of Representatives seat for Kosofe Federal Constituency in Lagos State on the platform of the All Progressives Congress.

Odunsi’s media aide, Gbemiga Jacobs, disclosed this in a statement shared with our correspondent on Monday.

Jacobs said the aspirant would focus on youth employment, small business growth, and access to basic services if elected.

The statement read, “Remi Odunsi nee Oluwalogbon has thrown her hat into the ring to contest for a seat in the House of Representatives under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to represent the people of Kosofe Federal Constituency, Lagos.”

Odunsi, a graduate of Management and Accounting from the University of Ife, is also a certified member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, with additional executive training from Lagos Business School, Harvard, and EDHEC.

The statement described her as an entrepreneur with interests across multiple sectors, noting that she currently serves as the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Eridan Group, while also holding non-executive roles in other organisations.

Beyond her corporate background, the statement highlighted her involvement in community development initiatives, including skills acquisition programmes and support schemes for small-scale traders.

According to the statement, more than 4,000 beneficiaries across Ketu, Ikeja, and Epe participated in her empowerment programmes in 2023, while a separate initiative in partnership with a financial institution in 2024 focused on training and providing grants to market women.

It added that her interventions also covered water access projects, school support, and periodic food distribution to vulnerable households in parts of Lagos and neighbouring states.

Explaining her decision to seek elective office, Odunsi said her ambition was to expand the reach of her interventions and influence policymaking at the national level.

“I have been doing this work for years without holding public office. Imagine what becomes possible when someone with a genuine passion for service and a heart for the people is elected into the National Assembly.

“If we are to transform lives at scale in Kosofe Federal Constituency, we must have a seat at the table, particularly at the National Assembly, where laws are made and policies are shaped. This is why I am in the race for the House of Representatives,” she said.

She outlined a seven-point legislative agenda, with a strong focus on economic empowerment and social development.

Odunsi said she would prioritise the establishment of two digital skills and enterprise centres aimed at training about 10,000 young people, as well as sponsor legislation to improve access to finance for women-owned businesses.

She added, “We must deliberately invest in our young people and small businesses. Skills development, access to capital, and enabling policies are critical if we are serious about reducing unemployment and growing local economies.

The media aide said the aspirant plans to support the formalisation of at least 3,000 micro, small and medium enterprises, linking them to credit facilities and digital commerce platforms so they can scale sustainably.”

The aspirant also pledged to support improved healthcare access, particularly for women and children, alongside initiatives aimed at strengthening food security for households.

On infrastructure, she said attention would be given to federal investments in major markets within the constituency to improve commercial activities.

“Kosofe has the people, the commercial energy, and the geographic position to be something remarkable. What it has needed is representation that matches its potential,” she said.

“I am a woman you can trust. Kosofe’s best chapter has not been written yet. I am asking for the opportunity to help write it.”

Nigeria’s next general elections, scheduled for February 2027, will mark another major democratic transition in Africa’s largest democracy. The polls are expected to cover the election of the President, members of the National Assembly, state governors, and state Houses of Assembly.

The Federal Government’s drive to improve Nigeria’s power infrastructure has received a boost as FGN Power Company Limited intensified engagements with subnational authorities in Ebonyi and Enugu states to advance the Presidential Power Initiative.

The company said the high-level meetings with both state governments were aimed at accelerating Phase 1 of the PPI, a flagship programme designed to overhaul transmission and distribution networks and deliver more stable electricity supply across the country.

According to a statement signed by its Communications Lead, Magdalene Abang, on Monday in Abuja, the delegation, led by the Chief Commercial Officer, Babatunde Daramola-Oniru, held talks with Secretaries to the State Governments, commissioners, and other top officials to ensure alignment on key infrastructure projects.

The statement read, “The management of FGN Power Company has reaffirmed its commitment to strategic stakeholder collaboration following high-level engagements with the Ebonyi and Enugu State Governments. These meetings are a critical component of the ongoing efforts to accelerate Phase 1 of the Presidential Power Initiative, aimed at transforming Nigeria’s energy landscape.

The delegation, led by the Chief Commercial Officer of FGNPC, Babatunde Daramola-Oniru, met with the Secretaries to the State Governments, Commissioners of Energy, and key representatives to deepen alignment and ensure the seamless execution of vital power infrastructure projects within both states.”

Speaking during the engagements, Daramola-Oniru stressed that collaboration with states and host communities would determine the long-term success of the initiative, noting that technical execution alone would not guarantee sustainable outcomes.

He said, “The success of the Presidential Power Initiative goes beyond technical execution; it is rooted in strong partnerships with state governments, host communities, and key stakeholders.

“Engaging stakeholders from the onset ensures local ownership, reduces implementation risks, and guarantees that these investments serve the people long after project completion. What we are building is not just infrastructure, but a foundation for economic growth and improved quality of life.”

In Ebonyi State, discussions centred on the proposed Ugwaji–Okposi 330kV double-circuit transmission line, a project expected to unlock stranded generation capacity and strengthen grid reliability in the South-East.

The company said the project would enhance power evacuation capacity, improving electricity supply to homes, industries, and public institutions.

Welcoming the intervention, the Secretary to the Ebonyi State Government, Prof. Grace Umezurike, described the project as vital to the state’s development ambitions.

She said, “We wholeheartedly welcome these projects and pledge our full support to ensure they are delivered on schedule.

In Ebonyi, the significance of this intervention cannot be overstated; it is the backbone required to power our international airport, our hospitals, and our schools. We are committed to removing any bottlenecks to ensure our people reap these benefits quickly.”

Similarly, in Enugu State, officials linked the PPI projects to the state’s broader urban renewal and economic transformation agenda.

The Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, said reliable electricity remained central to the vision of positioning Enugu as a modern smart city.

“This partnership aligns perfectly with His Excellency’s vision to transform Enugu into a modern smart city.

“A robust and reliable power network is the prerequisite for the digital and industrial revolution we are building. Enugu is ready to support sectoral investments and provide the necessary cooperation to ensure FGN Power Company’s projects are a resounding success,” Onyia said.

FGN Power Company, a special-purpose vehicle set up to implement the PPI, is mandated to support the Federal Government’s target of increasing grid capacity by 4,000 megawatts over the next three years.

The initiative, being executed in partnership with Siemens Energy and engineering, procurement and construction contractors, is expected to address longstanding bottlenecks in Nigeria’s power value chain, particularly in transmission and distribution.

Industry data indicate that despite an installed generation capacity of over 13,000MW, Nigeria delivers about 4,000–5,000MW to consumers due to transmission and distribution constraints.

To address these gaps, the company said state governments would play critical roles in facilitating right-of-way approvals for transmission lines, resolving land and environmental issues, and providing security to prevent vandalism of power infrastructure.

It added that sustained collaboration at the subnational level would be key to bridging the gap between federal policy and on-ground execution.

The engagements signal increased federal-state coordination in the power sector, as authorities emphasise the need for local support in infrastructure delivery.

The Commandant, National Defence College, Rear Adm. Abdullahi Ahmed, has described climate change as a growing strategic national security threat that requires concrete military preparedness.

Ahmed made the call on Monday in Abuja while declaring open a roundtable on military response to climate-driven energy security challenges.

He said climate change had gone beyond environmental and developmental concerns, stressing that it now posed serious risks to national stability and human security.

He called for stronger military preparedness and multi-stakeholder collaboration to address climate-driven insecurity in Nigeria.

Climate change is no longer solely an environmental issue but a strategic and security concern with far-reaching implications for our national stability,” he said.

The commandant urged defence institutions, government agencies, development partners and local communities to work together to build resilience and develop sustainable responses to emerging threats.

He also encouraged participants to actively contribute ideas that would help shape effective strategies to safeguard the nation against climate-induced challenges

In a goodwill message, the Provost, Centre for Strategic Research and Studies, NDC, Prof. Adam Ahmed, said it was no longer possible to discuss governance, economic growth or political stability without considering the impact of climate change.

Ahmed noted that many global conflicts and crises were increasingly linked to climate-related factors, including competition over scarce resources and environmental stress.

Across the world, climate realities are shaping security dynamics, and in many cases, the military is called upon to respond when these pressures escalate,” he said.

Ahmed emphasised the need for the armed forces to deepen their understanding of climate dynamics and develop appropriate response mechanisms to effectively tackle climate-induced security threats.

He commended partners and stakeholders for their continued support and urged participants to leverage the forum to develop practical and sustainable solutions to the evolving challenge.

The roundtable was organised by the Centre for Strategic Research and Studies of the NDC in collaboration with the Sustainable Development Training Centre.

The event was designed to deepen understanding of the climate–security relationship and to generate practical recommendations for defence and security institutions.

It seeks to engage senior military personnel, policymakers, academics, development partners, and climate-security practitioners in strategic dialogue focused on mitigating climate-driven insecurity in Nigeria.

The acclaimed acting National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress, Nafiu Bala, has alleged that he was deceived into attending a ceremony where the party’s leadership was handed over.

Bala stated this in an interview with AIT News aired on Monday while reacting to reports that he was present during the installation of former Senate President David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola as interim National Chairman and Secretary of the party.

He claimed he was invited under the false pretence that the July 2025 event was merely for the adoption of new coalition members into the ADC, led by former chairman Ralph Nwosu.

Instead, he said he found himself at a ceremony installing new leaders.

“I was tricked to attend the handing-over ceremony to David Mark. Ralph told me that it was just adoption of new members for the coalition movement.

“But on the same day, Nwosu announced his resignation, and on the same day, he announced David Mark and other excos,” he said.

Bala, who was ADC’s deputy national chairman at the time, claimed he only realised the true nature of the gathering after it had begun.

He maintained that he had no prior knowledge of the leadership transition and did not consent to it.

Asked why he did not raise the alarm or go to court immediately after the event, the embattled politician said he consulted widely before forwarding his name to the Independent National Electoral Commission as acting National Chairman of the ADC.

According to him, INEC informed him that he had resigned his position as Deputy National Chairman — a development he described as part of the deception.

“Immediately after one week, we started organising meetings. The remaining NWC and NEC members were consulting across the country before taking any action.

“After consultations, I wrote a letter to INEC, as Deputy National Chairman and with the remaining NWC, that I had resumed office as the authentic acting National Chairman of the party.

After the consultations, I remember that immediately we went to court,” Bala said.

Residents of Imasayi in Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State have raised concerns over what they describe as decades of political exclusion, calling on Governor Dapo Abiodun to address the imbalance ahead of the forthcoming elections.

In an open letter addressed to the governor, the group, under the banner of Concerned Imasayi Citizens, lamented that Imasayi has consistently been sidelined in the representation of Yewa North/Isokan State Constituency 1 at the Ogun State House of Assembly, despite its size and political contributions.

The community noted that the constituency, which comprises over seven wards within Yewa North, has never produced a representative from Imasayi, a situation they described as unjust and long overdue for correction.

While acknowledging the developmental strides of the Abiodun administration, particularly the construction of the Imasayi–Ayetoro road linking Igan-Okoto and surrounding communities, the group said infrastructure alone cannot substitute for equitable political representation.

“The people of Imasayi have been patient and supportive over the years, backing candidates from other wards. We believe it is now our turn to contribute meaningfully to governance.

“In the history of Yewa North & Isokan state constituency 1 Politics in Ogun state which comprises over 7 wards, Imasayi has been cast aside and marginalized from representing the local government at The State House of Assembly Chamber.

“We express our gratitude to Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun, for your unconditional commitment, inclusiveness and generosity for finding us worthy in your leadership role. We wish to reiterate our high praise anew for bringing some of our sons and daughters into your government for a better Ogun State.

The group specifically urged the governor to support the emergence of Prince OluwaFemi Akinlawon, an indigene of Imasayi, as the next representative of Yewa North/Isokan Constituency 1 in the state assembly.

They described Akinlawon as a credible aspirant with deep roots in the community and the capacity to advance the interests of the constituency.

It further reads “We passionately write heartily to please in your magnanimous efforts and dedication for better Ogun State, acknowledging our viewpoint (IMASAYI) in the forthcoming elections giving a bonafide son of Imasayi (Prince OluwaFemi Akinlawon) a chance to represent the people of Yewa North Isokan state constituency 1 in the Ogun State House of Assembly.

“Prince OluwaFemi Akinlawon is a bonafide son of Imasayi Yewa North Isokan state constituency who has a valid root after a deep background check, OluwaFemi Akinlawon an aspirant for the Ogun State House of Assembly, Yewa North (Isokan state constituency 1). Imasayi people have waited patiently, supported other ward candidates and we believe it's our time to contribute to a better Yewa North and Ogun State through our son Hon. Prince OluwaFemi Akinlawon.

Reaffirming their support for the governor’s leadership, the citizens commended his inclusive style of governance and expressed optimism that their appeal would receive due consideration.

The appeal adds to growing conversations around zoning, inclusiveness, and grassroots representation in Ogun West Senatorial District, as political activities begin to gather momentum ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Observers say the demand from Imasayi reflects broader tensions within local political structures, where issues of fairness and rotation of power continue to shape alignments and aspirations.

AKURE — A coalition of 15 support groups of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State has rejected a directive by the party’s State Executive Committee mandating their registration, warning that the move could hinder grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The groups argued that excessive bureaucracy could weaken efforts to secure the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The directive, issued by the state chapter of the APC through its Publicity Secretary, Muyide Kayode, called on all support groups to formally register with the party to ensure coordination and unity in pursuit of shared electoral objectives.

However, in a joint statement released in Akure, the coalition maintained that its members were already “duly registered and certified” by the APC National Secretariat in Abuja and were operating in full compliance with the party’s constitution.

Our mandate flows from the national headquarters, while our strength comes from the streets, wards, and markets of Ondo State where we mobilise daily,” the statement read.

The groups contended that a single state register could not adequately capture the reach and activities of autonomous organisations operating across riverine communities and urban centres, warning that limiting their scope could undermine campaign effectiveness.

They advocated a partnership-based approach, emphasising their readiness to align strategies with the state chapter and Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

“True coordination means joint planning, shared intelligence, and logistical backing—not administrative roadblocks. Our operatives are already in the field; let us keep them there,” the coalition said.

The statement further stressed that effective synchronisation should be built on consultation rather than directives, describing the registration order as one that could breed distrust among party stakeholders.

Our allegiance is to the broom, to the President, and to Nigerians who believe in the Renewed Hope agenda,” they said.

The coalition warned that time spent on administrative processes could detract from voter engagement efforts, noting that expanding participation by support groups would enhance electoral success.

“With 2027 approaching, every hour spent on paperwork is an hour lost in winning voters,” the statement added.

Reaffirming their commitment to the party’s success, the groups urged all APC structures—from ward to state level—to intensify mobilisation efforts.

“The State Executive Committee must not use bureaucracy to create bottlenecks or overreach its authority,” they cautioned.

They concluded that unity of purpose among multiple support groups would ensure a decisive victory for President Tinubu in Ondo State.

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) is set to commence disbursement of the long-awaited Cabotage Vessel Financing Fund (CVFF) following presidential approval.

Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, disclosed this on Thursday, during the commissioning of the NIMASA–UNILAG Institute of Maritime Studies building at the University of Lagos.

According to the minister, President Bola Tinubu has approved the commencement of the fund’s disbursement.

It will be recalled that NIMASA opened the application portal for the intervention fund on January 22, 2026, inviting eligible indigenous shipowners to apply for the $25 million CVFF.

About 60 applicants were said to have indicated interest through the application portal.

However, Oyetola, at the institute launch, enthused that the funds, when disbursed are expected to boost indigenous shipping capacity and create up to 30,000 jobs.

However, stakeholders were cautious in this optimism over the Minister’s pronouncement of the presidential approval.

They said the same approval was allegedly secured by the erstwhile Minister of Transportation, Mu’azu Jaji Sambo, who claimed that the then President Mohammed Buhari has given his approval for the disbursement and swore with his honour that the CVFF would be disbursed before he left office.

“Until he left, the disbursement was carried out in the fertile imagination of Minister Mu’azu. We hope Oyetola’s assurance of disbursement would not go through the same route” a ship owner based in Apapa declared.

Meanwhile, the Minister, while commissioning the institute, reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to advancing Nigeria’s marine and blue economy through sustained investment in human capital and infrastructure.

The facility, donated by the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), is equipped with modern lecture rooms, laboratories, and specialised facilities to support teaching, research, and innovation in the maritime sector.

Describing the project as a milestone, Oyetola said the initiative reflects the government’s resolve to strengthen institutional capacity and position the blue economy as a key driver of national prosperity.

“The future of the blue economy will be shaped not just by natural endowments, but by the quality of minds we nurture within institutions such as this,” the Minister said.

He emphasised that with over 90 per cent of Nigeria’s trade conducted via maritime channels, the sector remains critical to economic diversification, job creation, and sustainable development.

Highlighting ongoing efforts to build manpower, Oyetola disclosed that 2,459 Nigerians have been sponsored under the Nigerian Seafarers Development Programme (NSDP) for training in maritime institutions across countries including the United Kingdom, Egypt, the Philippines, India, and Romania

He added that 1,088 beneficiaries have obtained their Certificates of Competency.

The Minister also pointed to opportunities in fisheries and aquaculture, noting that Nigeria’s annual fish demand of 3.6 million metric tonnes presents significant potential for food security and employment.

Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, has said the state has improved significantly since he assumed office in 2023, citing progress in security, education, infrastructure, and economic development.

He spoke at a high-level workshop for senior government officials organised by the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations as part of the Nigeria Public Relations Week, Croc City 2026, held in Kaduna on Saturday evening.

The workshop, themed “From Policy to Public Trust: Strategic Communication for Vision Alignment and Governance Delivery for Renewed Hope,” brought together commissioners, special advisers, councillors, permanent secretaries, and other senior government officials.

Sani said the state he inherited was rich in potential but burdened by insecurity, infrastructure gaps, and weak social indicators.

Kaduna is not where it was. Kaduna is by far a better place today, and even more exciting is the fact that Kaduna is on the move and set to do even greater things and attain higher heights,” he said.

He stated that incremental reforms were insufficient to achieve the level of transformation required, stressing the need for a performance-driven governance structure.

According to him, his administration adopted a framework anchored on Key Performance Indicators for ministries, departments, and agencies to ensure accountability.

We vowed that vision must translate into measurable impact or else it will remain an aspiration,” the governor added.

Sani said his administration is guided by seven strategic pillars: security, infrastructure development, institutional strengthening, trade and investment, agriculture, human capital development, and citizen engagement.

“These pillars are not isolated priorities but interconnected levers designed to function as a coherent system, each reinforcing the other toward transforming Kaduna into a secure, prosperous, and inclusive society,” he said.

On security, he described it as the foundation of development, noting that economic and social activities could not thrive without safety.

He disclosed that the state collaborated with the Office of the National Security Adviser and the military to establish new bases in Giwa, Birnin Gwari, and parts of Southern Kaduna.

“We strengthened mobility and response through the deployment of over 150 operational vehicles and 500 motorcycles to security agencies. In our urban centres, we constituted a Joint Task Force that has significantly reduced incidents of street crime and banditry,” he said.

Sani said over 20,000 hectares of farmland previously inaccessible had been recovered, while more than 1,000 displaced persons had been resettled, alongside support for over 117,000 internally displaced persons.

He added that Kaduna had established the first forensic laboratory in Northern Nigeria and launched the Kaduna Incident Report Centre, a 24-hour emergency response system.

“While the result is not perfect, security is improving, confidence is returning, and economic activity is gradually expanding in areas once considered inaccessible. This is what we now call the Kaduna Peace Model,” he said.

On education, Sani said 736 classrooms had been constructed and over 1,200 renovated, while 10,000 teachers were recruited and more than 33,000 personnel trained.

The US military said it killed three people in a strike on an alleged drug-trafficking vessel in the Caribbean on Sunday, bringing the controversial campaign’s death toll to at least 180.

President Donald Trump’s administration insists it is effectively at war with what it calls “narco-terrorists” in Latin America, and began targeting suspected drug-smuggling boats last September.

US Southern Command, which is responsible for Washington’s forces in the region, said it conducted a “lethal kinetic strike on a vessel operated by Designated Terrorist Organisations.”

“Intelligence confirmed the vessel was transiting along known narco-trafficking routes in the Caribbean and was engaged in narco-trafficking operations. Three male narco-terrorists were killed during this action,” it said in a post on X.

US military officials have claimed at least six such strikes in April, bringing the total toll of people killed in these operations to at least 180, according to an AFP tally.

The Trump administration has provided no definitive evidence that the vessels it targets are involving in drug trafficking, prompting heated debate about the legality of the operations.

International legal experts and rights groups say the strikes likely amount to extrajudicial killings as they have apparently targeted civilians who do not pose an immediate threat to the United States.

Iran is not currently planning to attend talks with the United States, state media said, after President Donald Trump ordered US negotiators to travel to Pakistan on Monday, just days before a ceasefire in the Middle East expires.

The ongoing US blockade of Iranian ports has been a significant sticking point, an issue further complicated by an American destroyer on Sunday firing on and seizing an Iranian ship that tried to evade it.

Tehran said it would retaliate with Tasnim news agency reporting that Iran had sent drones in the direction of US military ships after its vessel was seized.

State broadcaster IRIB on Sunday cited Iranian sources as saying “there are currently no plans to participate in the next round of Iran-US talks”.

The Fars and Tasnim news agencies had earlier cited anonymous sources as saying “the overall atmosphere cannot be assessed as very positive”, adding that lifting the US blockade was a precondition for negotiations.

State-run IRNA, meanwhile, pointed to the blockade and Washington’s “unreasonable and unrealistic demands”, saying that “in these circumstances, there is no clear prospect of fruitful negotiations”.

Iran and the United States, along with Israel, are just days away from the end of the two-week ceasefire that halted the Middle East war, ignited by surprise US-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28.

There has so far been only a single, 21-hour negotiating session held in Islamabad on April 11 that ended inconclusively, though groundwork for fresh talks continued afterwards.

“We’re offering a very fair and reasonable DEAL, and I hope they take it,” Trump said in a post on Sunday, while also renewing his threats against Iran’s infrastructure if a deal is not made.

– US fires on Iranian ship –

Trump has been under pressure to find an off-ramp since Tehran moved early in the war to choke off the Strait of Hormuz.

The vital waterway is a conduit for a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas in peacetime, and its closure has hammered the global economy and roiled markets.

Having failed to force it open again, Trump countered with a US naval blockade on Iranian ports in an attempt to cut off Tehran’s oil revenues.

On Sunday, he announced that a massive Iranian-flagged cargo ship “tried to get past our Naval Blockade, and it did not go well for them.”

A US destroyer warned the ship to stop and then forced it to by “by blowing a hole in the engine room,” Trump said, adding: “Right now, U.S. Marines have custody of the vessel.”

Trump said the Iranian-flagged ship, Touska, is under US Treasury sanctions “because of prior history of illegal activity.”

The ISNA news agency later cited a spokesperson for Iran’s central command centre as warning that “the armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran will soon respond and retaliate against this armed piracy and the US military”.

Tasnim news agency reported Tehran had sent drones in the direction of US military ships after it “attacked” and seized Touska.

Iran had briefly reopened the strait on Friday in recognition of an Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire in Lebanon, but closed it again the following day in response to the United States maintaining its blockade.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards warned that any attempt to pass through the strait without permission “will be considered cooperation with the enemy, and the offending vessel will be targeted”.

Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei on Sunday said the blockade was “a violation” of the ceasefire and illegal collective punishment of the Iranian people.

A handful of oil and gas tankers had crossed the strait early on Saturday during the brief reopening, but by early Sunday morning, tracking data showed the waterway empty of shipping.

The afternoon before, a trio of incidents involving Iranian fire and threats towards commercial vessels demonstrated the danger of any attempted crossing.

– Heightened security –

In spite of the uncertainty surrounding the talks in Pakistan, security was visibly stepped up in Islamabad on Sunday in anticipation of the negotiations.

Authorities announced road closures and traffic restrictions across the city, as well as in neighbouring Rawalpindi.

The US president said his negotiators, whom he did not name, would arrive in the Pakistani capital on Monday evening.

A White House official said the delegation would be led by Vice President JD Vance and include Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.

A major issue in the negotiations has been Iran’s stockpile of near-weapons-grade enriched uranium.

Trump said on Friday that Iran had agreed to hand over its roughly 440 kilograms (970 pounds) of enriched uranium. “We’re going to get it by going in with Iran, with lots of excavators,” he said.

But Iran’s foreign ministry has said the stockpile, thought to be buried deep under rubble from US bombing in last June’s 12-day war, was “not going to be transferred anywhere”, and surrendering it “to the US has never been raised in negotiations.”

Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has welcomed former Governor and Senator, Ibrahim Shekarau, to the All Progressives Congress, describing his return as a major boost to the party in the state.

The governor said Shekarau’s return would further strengthen the ruling party’s structure and political influence in Kano ahead of future elections.

This was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad.

According to the statement, Yusuf said a date would soon be announced, in consultation with the party’s national secretariat, for the formal reception of the former governor into the APC.

The governor noted that the party in Kano had continued to witness increasing support and consolidation across various parts of the state.

He said the APC remained a dominant political force in Kano and was well-positioned for future electoral contests.

“The party in Kano continues to witness growing support and consolidation, positioning itself as the most dominant political force in the state,” the statement read.

Yusuf added that the party was battle-ready to win all elective positions in the forthcoming elections, citing unity and strategic alignment as factors driving confidence among members.

He further assured party members and supporters that the leadership was committed to strengthening internal cohesion and expanding its grassroots base across the state.

The governor also urged party faithful to remain steadfast and continue mobilising support as preparations begin for future political contests.

PUNCH Online earlier reported that Shekarau formally announced his exit from the Peoples Democratic Party on Sunday

In a resignation letter dated April 19, 2026, and addressed to the PDP Chairman of Giginyu Ward in Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State, the former governor said his exit from the party took immediate effect.

“Accept this letter please as notice of my resignation from my position as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with effect from today,” he wrote.

Shekarau said the decision followed extensive consultations within his political group, adding that it was part of plans to continue his political journey on another platform.

This decision follows wide and extensive deliberations within my political group, to pursue our political career in a different political party,” he stated.

He also expressed appreciation to party leaders at the ward level, praying for continued guidance in their service.

Virgil van Dijk scored a last-gasp winner against Everton on Sunday as Liverpool strengthened their push for a Champions League spot next season ahead of a Premier League summit meeting between Manchester City and Arsenal.

On a pivotal day in the English top division, fourth-placed Aston Villa squandered a two-goal lead against Sunderland but scored in stoppage time to win 4-3.

At the other end of the table, Morgan Gibbs-White netted a hat-trick as struggling Nottingham Forest came from behind against Burnley to win 4-1 and heap the pressure on troubled Tottenham.

Just a few weeks ago the battle for the top five, which guarantees entry into the Champions League, looked as though it might be tight.

But fifth-placed Liverpool’s victory in their first match at Everton’s new Hill Dickinson Stadium takes them seven points clear of stumbling Chelsea, who lost to Manchester United on Saturday.

Captain Van Dijk was the hero for Arne Slot’s Liverpool, heading Dominik Szoboszlai’s corner past a helpless Jordan Pickford in the 100th minute.

Mohamed Salah had opened the scoring for last season’s champions, slotting home in the first half following a superbly weighted pass from Cody Gakpo.

The goal came just two minutes after Iliman Ndiaye’s effort at the other end was cancelled by VAR, with Jake O’Brien ruled offside.

Salah, departing at the end of the season, has equalled Steven Gerrard’s nine goals to be the joint top-scoring player in the Premier League fixture between the two Merseyside teams.

The goal took the wind out of the sails of David Moyes’ team but they were level through Beto within 10 minutes of the restart.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, on the left of Everton’s attack, fired across goal for Beto to attack and he poked home ahead of an onrushing Giorgi Mamardashvili

Liverpool goalkeeper Mamardashvili was stretchered off after being injured in the scramble for the Everton goal, replaced by Freddie Woodman.

The game looked destined to end as a draw but the officials signalled 11 added minutes but Van Dijk had the last laugh.

– Villa thriller –

Ollie Watkins scored twice for Villa, who moved level on 58 points with third-placed Manchester United, three clear of Liverpool.

England forward Watkins’ early opener was cancelled out by Sunderland’s Chris Rigg but Watkins restored Villa’s lead in the 36th minute with his second headed goal of the game.

Morgan Rogers gave Villa breathing space with a third shortly after the restart as Villa remained on track for a return to the Champions League.

Unai Emery’s team nearly threw it away as first Trai Hume and then Wilson Isidor scored within a minute for Sunderland but there was still time for Tammy Abraham to grab a dramatic late winner.

Nottingham Forest, involved in a relegation scrap with West Ham and Tottenham, were in deep trouble after Zian Flemming put Burnley ahead in first-half stoppage time.

But Gibbs-White put on a second-half masterclass to seal an ultimately comfortable win for Forest, who are now five points clear of 18th-placed Spurs, with Wolves and Burnley almost certainly doomed.

Tottenham could only manage a 2-2 draw at home to Brighton on Saturday to move a point behind West Ham, who travel to face Crystal Palace on Monday.

Manchester City host long-time leaders Arsenal at the Etihad in the late afternoon Sunday kick-off.

A win for Pep Guardiola’s men plus victory against Burnley in midweek would take City top of the table.

Nollywood actor-turned-politician Yul Edochie has stirred controversy after criticising Igbos who condemn their kinsmen for supporting President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.

In a post shared on X on Saturday, Edochie issued a strong rebuke against such critics.

Any Igbo man that is dragging his fellow Igbo man for supporting President TINUBU, that person is a monkey and a coward.”

He argued that those criticising supporters of the president from the South-East often fail to hold people from other regions to the same standard.

“Show me a video of you dragging Yorubas who are supporting TINUBU. Show me a video of you dragging Northerners who are supporting Tinubu. Show me a video of you dragging all the past leaders who couldn’t fix Nigeria. Show me a video of you dragging Northern celebrities that support Tinubu. None,” Mr Edochie said.

Recall President Tinubu’s “City Boy” movement has already begun gaining traction nationwide, including in the South-East, where prominent figures like Obi Cubana are reportedly leading local efforts.

Two men were caught in the early hours of Sunday, April 19, 2026, while trying to steal solar streetlights along the Bulou-Orua–Ebedebiri Road in Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

As of the time of this report, the two suspects are already in police custody at the Police Command Headquarters in Yenagoa for investigation and possible prosecution.

According to the police spokesman, DSP Musa Mohammed, who confirmed the arrest in a telephone conversation on Sunday afternoon, the suspects, identified as Ayebademone Peremobowei and Peres John, are allegedly from nearby Tungbo town.

A local hunter caught them in the act and raised an alarm, leading to their arrest.

Residents say over 100 solar lights installed by the NDDC have gone missing, leaving many areas in darkness and affecting development.

reports that Solar-powered streetlight projects are a common intervention across communities in Bayelsa State, largely driven by the NDDC to improve rural electrification, security and economic activity. The agency has executed multiple installations in Sagbama Local Government Area and other parts of the state under its “Light Up Niger Delta” initiative.

In Sagbama specifically, several contracts have been awarded for the installation of solar streetlights in communities such as Ebedebiri, Angiama and Odoni, reflecting sustained federal investment in off-grid lighting infrastructure.

However, vandalism and theft of public infrastructure, including solar streetlights, have become recurring concerns in the area.

In December 2024, two suspected vandals were electrocuted while attempting to steal streetlight poles in Sagbama, highlighting the risks and persistence of the crime.

Residents have also raised concerns about missing or non-functional installations in some communities, suggesting that theft and maintenance challenges continue to undermine the intended benefits of these projects.

The Kwara State Government will begin the airlift of intending pilgrims for the 2026 Hajj exercise on May 6, 2026, with departures scheduled from the General Tunde Idiagbon International Airport to Saudi Arabia.

The Executive Secretary of the Kwara State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, Abdulsalam Abdulkadir, disclosed this on Sunday during an enlightenment programme organised for prospective pilgrims at the Board’s premises in Ilorin.

“Airlift of intending pilgrims from Kwara State will commence on the sixth of next month from the General Tunde Idiagbon International Airport, Ilorin to Saudi Arabia,” Abdulkadir said.

He added that the exercise would be conducted in batches to ensure a seamless process.

The second batch of pilgrims will depart on the seventh, while the third batch will depart on the ninth of next month,” he stated.

Abdulkadir further revealed that Saudi authorities had introduced identification measures to enhance coordination and safety during the pilgrimage.

“Saudi Arabia has produced ID cards containing pilgrims’ details, which will be issued to them upon arrival in Medina to enable them to perform their Hajj rites in Mecca,” he explained.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the Board, Mashood Mahmud-Jimba, commended Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for his sustained support toward successful Hajj operations in the state.

“I want to commend the Governor for his unwavering support in ensuring a smooth Hajj operation for Kwara pilgrims,” Mahmud-Jimba said.

“We give thanks to Almighty Allah for the successful preparations so far, and for the Governor’s continued commitment to facilitating seamless Hajj operations,” he added.

The chairman also assured intending pilgrims that necessary logistics had been fully arranged ahead of their arrival in Saudi Arabia.

“In Saudi Arabia, accommodation, transportation and tents at Mina and Arafat have been secured and are ready for the exercise,” he noted.

Delivering a lecture at the programme, the Grand Khadi of the Kwara State Shariah Court of Appeal, Abdullateef Kamaldeen, urged the pilgrims to uphold righteousness throughout the spiritual journey.

“Intending pilgrims must perform their Hajj with the fear of Allah,” Kamaldeen advised

You should remain patient while in the Holy Land in order to have a successful Hajj exercise,” he said.

Special prayers were later offered for a hitch-free operation, led by the Imam Imale of Ilorin, Abdulhameed Abdullahi, alongside Imam Gambari, Ajanasi Agba of Ilorin, and this year’s Amir Hajj, the Etsu Tsaragi, Aliyu Kpotwa.

Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, on Sunday called on the management of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board to reschedule the examination date for eight candidates of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination kidnapped last Wednesday.

Alia made the call on Sunday when he played host to the remaining 13 kidnap victims who were rescued in the early hours of Sunday at the old banquet hall, Government House, Makurdi.

The governor said the kidnap victims were victims of circumstances and must not be neglected.

Alia said, “Many of the students were travelling to Otukpo. Seven were regular passengers, and 15 were kidnapped that fateful day. One of the victims escaped, and another one escaped the following day.

Today, all the remaining 13 kidnap victims were rescued by the security agents with the cooperation of the communities.

“I call on JAMB to look into the case of the eight young students and reschedule dates for them to write their examination.”

The governor explained that 15 out of the 18 passengers who were on board the Benue Links bus were kidnapped last Wednesday night between Taraku and Otukpo in Gwer East and Otukpo LGAs of the state, respectively.

The governor further directed the state Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr Paul Ogwuche, to take the victims to the State University Teaching Hospital in Makurdi for proper medical check-up and treatment before handing them over to their families.

The governor applauded the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, and all the heads of security agencies in the state for their efforts in rescuing the victims.

Alia recalled that security operatives in the state have shown tremendous diligence in the discharge of their duties, rescuing several kidnap victims across the state in the past.

While confirming that seven suspects have been arrested in connection with the latest kidnapping, Alia appealed to security agents to help flush out criminal elements dwelling in ungoverned areas across the state, saying, “Our people deserve to live in peace.”

Speaking earlier, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Ifeanyi Emenari, said the rescue was made possible through the collaborative efforts of all the security agencies and the communities.

Eighteen passengers, including the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination candidates, were travelling to Otukpo that Wednesday night when they were abducted by gunmen around 8 pm.

The UTME candidates, whose examination centre was in Otukpo, about 105 kilometres from Makurdi, had planned to spend the night in Otukpo before their early examination period. Unfortunately, they were kidnapped a few kilometres from Otukpo.

The management of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board had, in a statement issued on Saturday, denied that any of its candidates were among the kidnap victims.

But a relative of one of the victims, who did not want to be named and spoke to journalists in Makurdi on Saturday night, berated JAMB for not carrying out thorough findings before issuing the statement.

Members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, popularly known as Shi’ites, on Sunday staged a rally in Bauchi in support of Iran, urging Muslim faithful to live according to the teachings of Islam.

The call was made by Zeenatuddeen Zakzaky, wife of the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky, during the 5th International Conference on Islamic Thought themed, “The State of Affairs and the Way Out.”

The conference was organised by the Sisters and Academic Fora under the leadership of Sheikh Zakzaky.

Speaking at the event, Zakzaky urged Muslims to align their lives with the teachings of the Qur’an and the traditions of the Prophet.

She said, “Muslims must live their lives according to how Allah enjoined us in the Qur’an and the way the Prophet has brought it to us.”

According to her, the aim of the conference was to remind adherents of their responsibility to live as true Muslims.

“We are not saying that everybody should become Muslims, but we also cannot afford to live against the teachings of the Qur’an,” she added.

Commenting on the conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran, she described the situation as a struggle between oppressors and the oppressed.

“I don’t want people to ask me about this war, but as all can see, it is now clear. I am siding with the axis of resistance against aggression. We know who the aggressors are,” she said.

Also speaking after a symbolic rally held on the sidelines of the conference, a follower of Zakzaky, Abdullahi Musa, said the demonstration was aimed at showing solidarity with Iran and the Palestinian people.

“We are out today as usual. We have been coming out for decades to show our solidarity with the oppressed people of Palestine. Many have been killed for this cause, but we continue because it is mandated for all believers to stand against injustice,” he said.

Musa stressed that the struggle for justice transcends religion, noting that both Muslims and Christians are obligated to defend the oppressed.

“It is mandatory to act against injustice. The purpose of all prophets is to fight for justice. That is why we are ready to even lose our lives in the process,” he added.

He called on the Nigerian government to take a more decisive stance on global injustices, particularly in relation to Palestine.

We have seen many nations act against this injustice, but we are yet to see concrete action by the Nigerian government. It is not enough. The government must clearly show solidarity with the oppressed,” he said.

Musa also criticised the country’s political system, arguing that Nigeria’s challenges stem from systemic issues rather than leadership alone.

“Yes, we are heading towards general elections, but does it work? The problem in this country is not leadership but the system. We have tried different political parties, yet the situation continues to worsen,” he stated.

The State Wing Executive Council of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Federal Capital Territory has directed primary and secondary school teachers to begin an indefinite strike on Monday.

The union gave the directive in a communique issued at the end of an emergency SWEC meeting in Gwagwalada, Abuja, on Friday.

The communique was jointly signed by the State Chairman, Abdullahi Shafa; the State Secretary, Margaret Jethro; and the State Publicity Secretary, Ibukun Adekeye.

In the communique, made available to newsmen in Abuja on Saturday, the union directed the teachers to comply with the directive and await further instructions.

It further advised parents to keep their children and wards in primary and secondary schools safe at home until further notice.

It said that the teachers would remain at home until all their demands are met.

The union explained that the decision was the outcome of the SWEC meeting, convened to review the seven-day ultimatum issued to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, on March 11, which expired on March 29.

It said that the SWEC appreciated Wike for the implementation of the N70,000 Minimum Wage and payment of the nine months arrears to the primary school teachers in the FCT.

It, however, said that the Council noted with concern that the Minister’s intervention, which facilitated the suspension of the 14-week strike on July 9, 2025, was yet to be addressed.

“The Minister constituted a committee on July 7, 2025 with a mandate to, within two weeks, harmonise all outstanding entitlements of primary school teachers.

The committee was also directed to make appropriate recommendations that would lead to a permanent solution to the frequent industrial disputes involving FCT Primary School Teachers.

“The committee concluded its assignment and submitted its report in August 2025, however, the report is yet to be made public,” it said.

The union explained that the seven-day ultimatum followed the unexplained delay in the implementation of the committee’s report.

It added that the move also became necessary following the continued silence on the legitimate demands of teachers amid the prevailing harsh economic realities in the country, particularly in the FCT.

It explained that the Wike-led FCT Administration was asked to, within the seven-day ultimatum, release and implement the report of primary school teachers’ outstanding entitlements.

The union further called for the removal of the “vacancies” precondition for the promotion of classroom teachers and totally reviewed the 2024 promotion exercise conducted by the FCT Civil Service Commission to allow for the unhindered promotion of eligible teachers.

It said that the SWEC was disturbed that following the expiration of the seven-day ultimatum on March 19, including the additional 28-day grace period granted to the authorities, there has been no tangible response to all the issues raised in the ultimatum.

“After exhaustive deliberations on the industrial issues and the silence on the legitimate demands of teachers’ welfare, the Council resolved that all public primary and secondary school teachers in the FCT shall, with effect from Monday, proceed on an indefinite strike until our demands are met,” the union said.

The strategic Strait of Hormuz was again closed on Sunday in the stand-off between Iran and the United States, with Iran’s powerful parliament speaker signalling a final peace deal remained “far” off despite some movement in negotiations.

As mediation efforts continued following high-level talks in Pakistan that failed to reach a deal, Iran said it will not allow the crucial maritime trade chokepoint to re-open until the United States ends a blockade of Iranian ports.

Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, speaker of the Iranian parliament, said in a televised address on Saturday night that there had been “progress” with Washington “but there are many gaps and some fundamental points remain”.

“We are still far from the final discussion,” said Ghalibaf, one of Tehran’s negotiators in the talks aimed at ending the war launched by Israel and the United States against the Islamic republic.

A two-week ceasefire is set to end on Wednesday unless it is renewed.

US President Donald Trump said “very good conversations” were going on with Iran but warned Tehran against trying to “blackmail” the United States.

On Friday, Tehran had declared the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas usually transits, open after a temporary ceasefire was agreed to halt Israel’s war with Iran’s ally Hezbollah in Lebanon.

That prompted elation in global markets and sent oil prices plunging, but Tehran reversed course after Trump insisted the US blockade of Iranian ports would continue until a final deal was struck.

“If America does not lift the blockade, traffic in the Strait of Hormuz will definitely be limited,” Ghalibaf said.

Iran’s supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei, who has yet to be seen since taking power after his father was killed in the war’s opening strikes, said in a written message that Iran’s navy “stands ready” to defeat the United States.

Trump accused Iran of getting “a little cute” with its recent moves and warned Tehran not to try to “blackmail” Washington by flip-flopping on the strait.

“We have very good conversations going on,” the president told reporters at the White House, adding that the United States was “taking a tough stand”.

– ‘Targeted’ –

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards warned that any attempt to pass through the strait without permission “will be considered cooperation with the enemy, and the offending vessel will be targeted”.

A handful of oil and gas tankers crossed the strait early on Saturday during the brief reopening, tracking data showed, but others retreated and hardly any vessels were crossing the waterway by the late afternoon.

A UK maritime security agency said the Revolutionary Guards fired at one tanker, while security intelligence firm Vanguard Tech reported the force had threatened to “destroy” an empty cruise ship that was fleeing the Gulf.

In a third incident, the UK agency said it received a report of a vessel “being hit by an unknown projectile, which caused damage” to shipping containers but no fire.

US President Donald Trump has ordered a federal investigation into the deaths and disappearances of at least 10 American scientists and researchers with links to sensitive aerospace, defence, and unexplained aerial phenomena programmes.

Officials confirmed that the president was briefed earlier this week on the cases, some of which date back to mid-2023. The White House said it is working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and other relevant agencies to examine whether any connections exist among the incidents.

“These are serious matters,” Trump said, noting that several of those involved were “very important people.”

As reported by the Economic Times on Sunday, Trump added that more information is expected to emerge in the coming days and expressed hope that the cases are unrelated

Concerns about a possible pattern have been raised by a member of the House Oversight Committee, Eric Burlison, who described the incidents as “too coincidental” to ignore.

Burlison has called for a comprehensive investigation, suggesting that the scientists’ access to classified information—including research related to unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAPs), commonly known as UFOs—may be a factor.

According to reports, some individuals died under unclear or violent circumstances, while others vanished without a trace.

Among them is Michael David Hicks, a physicist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory who specialised in comets and asteroids, who died in July 2023. The cause of his death was not publicly disclosed.

Other cases include the killing of a Massachusetts-based nuclear physicist and the disappearance of researchers and contractors linked to institutions such as Los Alamos National Laboratory and NASA facilities.

In one instance, a scientist reported missing in late 2025 was later found dead months afterward.

Burlison also pointed to the disappearance of a senior Air Force official who had reportedly attempted to contact him regarding research into UAPs before vanishing earlier this year.

While no official link has been established among the cases, Burlison has speculated that foreign adversaries, including China, Russia, or Iran, could be involved.

Authorities have not confirmed any such connection.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the administration is conducting a “holistic review” of all reported incidents to identify any potential commonalities.

No stone will be unturned,” she said, adding that updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.

The cases have drawn widespread attention due to the high-level nature of the individuals involved and the sensitive areas of research they were associated with.

For now, officials stress that the investigation remains in its early stages, with no definitive conclusions about whether the deaths and disappearances are linked.

The Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (retd.), has said that Nigeria and Türkiye have reached an agreement for the immediate deployment of 200 Nigerian Special Forces for training in Türkiye.

Musa disclosed this in an interview on the sidelines of the 5th Antalya Diplomacy Forum (ADF2026) in Antalya, Türkiye, on Saturday, following discussions with his Turkish counterpart, Yasar Guler.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the three-day forum, themed: “Mapping Tomorrow, Managing Uncertainties,” which started on Friday, is attended by world leaders, ministers, and diplomats, among others.

The minister explained that, following the agreement, Türkiye had allocated a training quota of 200 personnel from Nigeria’s Special Forces, who will be deployed immediately upon their return to Nigeria

We have a Special Forces training agreement. Türkiye has agreed to give us 200 Special Forces trainees, so as soon as I return, we are sending them here for training.

“We will continue to do a lot. There will be exercises. The first exercise is coming up later in the year. So, in so many areas of defence, we are going to work together,” he said.

The minister also disclosed that Nigeria and Türkiye had both agreed on joint defence equipment production and the transfer of military technology.

Musa said that Nigeria and Türkiye had come a long way, working together over the years, adding that, “since 1960, Türkiye has been like family to Nigeria.”

According to him, Türkiye has a lot of defence experience from which Nigeria could learn through shared experiences.

I’ve had a meeting with the Turkish Minister of Defence, where we shared a lot of ideas on how to improve our relationship, defence-wise.

“Türkiye has improved dramatically in the production of military hardware.

“Nigeria is still developing, and we have agreed that we are going to partner together so that we have a co-production of some of these items,” he said.

The minister noted that while Nigeria had been fighting asymmetric warfare against insurgency for about 17 years, Türkiye has had a similar experience of fighting against terrorism for 40 years.

He added, “Because of that, we will move into training, production, and improving on our defence, industrial production, and exchange of officers and soldiers.

NAN reports that the annual event also featured panel discussions and sessions covering a wide range of topics shaped by contemporary global defence and security, political, economic, environmental, and technological dynamics.

Participants from about 150 countries, including 5,000 decision-makers, 20 heads of state and government, 40 foreign ministers, 60 invited foreign media, and diplomats, among others, attended the forum.
