Expectations of 28-year-old Ogubode Adedamola, a graduate of the Lagos State University (LASU) to join his mates in the April 3rd 2025 Convocation, have been rendered futile following his alleged murder by a Pastor.

Report said the clergy, Evangelist. Whepetoji Babaniyeh had been arrested by the Police.

However, when the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin was contacted, he said he did not know of the arrest.

Adedamola, a 2024 graduate of Political Science Education and the Chief Executive Officer of Horlar Edu Consultancy—a private business operating on the LASU campus went missing on January 16,2025.

His girlfriend, who wished to remain anonymous, said she called Adedamola on the day he went missing and he told her that he was in front of the CCC Ileri Oluwa Parish, LASU 2, and would call her back. But he never did.

The Police were said to have visited the church based on his girlfriend’s account. But the pastor reportedly denied seeing Adedamola that day or knowing his whereabouts.

In the course of investigation, the Police were said to have obtained his bank statements where it was discovered that N1.5 million was transferred on the day he went missing.

Further findings by the Police revealed that part of the money was transferred into the Pastor and his daughter’s bank accounts.

Some students of LASU who spoke via telephone, said the suspect initially denied receiving the money, but later claimed it was for a Thanksgiving offering, after the police showed him evidence of the transaction. This led to his detention for further investigation.

The body of the LASU graduate was discovered to have been buried near the church premises. A gun and an axe were reportedly recovered from the Pastor

In spite of the efforts of the governments at various levels and stakeholders to fight. In the first six weeks of 2025, no fewer than 805 lives have been lost to violence and insecurity across the country.

Among the dead are 28 soldiers, five police officers, and an official of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, according to Saturday Vanguard’s checks and timeline in Nigeria Insecurity Tracker, NIT, compiled by Dataxpat.com.

The Nigeria Insecurity Tracker is an effort to chronicle and map insecurity and violence based on a weekly survey of media reports. The data include violent incidents relating to political, economic, and social grievances directed at the state or other affiliated groups, or the state employing violence to respond to those incidents.

The 805 death toll is based on reported incidents and the tally may be higher because many incidents are not reported or under-reported. And abducted victims who get killed in kidnappers’ dens are not tallied.

Six girls between the ages of 15 and 17 have been reportedly kidnapped by bandits in Pandogari Community, Rafi LGA of Niger State.

Residents told Daily Trust that the bandits invaded their community in the midnight on Wednesday, killing a vigilante, Aliyu Aminu, and kidnapping the girls.

Residents said the attackers, in their numbers, entered the community from Birnin Gwari axis, through the Mamman Kontagora Technical College, Pandogari.

Sources said the kidnapped girls were moved to Kwangel Forest.

One of the sources said the bandits moved from house to house during the night raid.

“The Wednesday night attack was third in a week. They have been attacking us since the negotiation with Kaduna State Government. The negotiation and settlement with residents of Birnin Gwari is not to our advantage.

“These attacks resumed since the day Kaduna State negotiated with them in Birnin Gwari. Last week, they came and kidnapped people including the village head. They came twice before the last Wednesday night,” he said.

The Chairman, Rafi LGA, Ayuba Usman Katako, confirmed the attacks in a Hausa programme, Tsalle Daya on Prestige FM, saying that Niger and Kaduna state governments needed to work together to ensure that the two states are safe.

“It was true that bandits attacked Pandogari community. In fact, that was not the only attack in the last two weeks. The Wednesday attack was the third one.

“In the previous attacks, they only succeeded in kidnapping some people in some Villages but on Wednesday, a life was lost before they kidnapped 8 people but 4 of them eventually escaped,” he explained.

The member representing Rafi Constituency in the Niger State House of Assembly, Zubairu Isma’ila Zannan Kwangoma, in a motion of urgent public importance on the floor of the House, noted that terrorists had, within one month, kidnapped 122 people and killed two in Rafi LGA.

He listed the most affected communities to include Pandogari, Gidigori, Ringa, and Kawo, adding that the affected communities had been severely subjected to economic hardship and agricultural destruction, after they were displaced.

An informant to bandits, Ado Haruna, who set the criminals against his nephew, Alhaji Bashiru Anas, and his family for abduction, has told of how he got only N200,000 from the N13 million collected as ransom.

The suspect, arrested by the operatives of Intelligence Response Team (IRT), was among others recently paraded by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in Abuja.

Haruna, of Angwa Kanawa Dutse Abba, Zaria, Kaduna State, was reported to have taken Shago Yaro, Tanimu Ayuba and Lamido Dantajiri, close to the house of his nephew, Alhaji Anas, and suggested him and his family members as a good catch for kidnapping that would yield a lot of money.

On the day they struck, the bandits invaded the Alhaji Anas’s residence at about 1 a.m., met his absence and went away with his two wives and three children, as well as his younger brother and his wife.

Nigerian Tribune further gathered that the captives were taken to Buruku Sabo Birni and held hostage for 60 days. A total sum of N13 million, four new motorcycles and N300,000 Airtel recharge cards were given to the bandits as ransom before the victims regained freedom. Surprisingly, Haruna got only N200,000 as his share from the ransom.

Also paraded was Nyali Hassan, a kidnapper, arrested with an AK-47 rifle. Nigerian Tribune learnt that prior to his arrest, IRT operatives received a credible information about some criminal elements who specialised in kidnapping and banditry within Makarfi, Bari, Yankin Rago and Beli towns in Kano and Kaduna states respectively.

In a follow-up on the information, Hassan, resident in StaraRago, Kano, was arrested, while an AK-47 rifle with breech number 6047 and two empty magazines were recovered from him.

During interrogation, Hassan reportedly confessed to being a kidnapper. He mentioned Kawuje, Moude, Babagida, Kabiru and Umar as his gang members, saying that two other AK-47 rifles and ammunition that were being used for operations were with Umar who was still at large.

The FPRO said that the IRT operatives were making efforts to get the other suspects arrested and recover the arms and ammunition still with them.

In an interview, Haruna, aged 50, told the Nigerian Tribune: “I’m into farming and vigilante work. It is true that I was the one who took bandits to Alhaji Anas’s house. Anas is my nephew; my elder sister’s son. I knew only one of the bandits who asked me to show them my nephew’s house.

“I led the bandits to his house but didn’t let him see me. We were living in the same community. They did not see Anas, so they took his wife and children. For the 60 days his family was in the bush, I was using Alhaji Anas’s phone to communicate with the bandits.

“The bandits were paid over N10 million as ransom, as I was made to know, but I was given N200,000 as my share. I bought maize with the money given to me.”

How I was picked

“I didn’t know how the police got information about my involvement. I just saw them at my home. Life pushed me into crime.”

In his own confession, Hassan from Kano State, stated: “I’m 35 years old. I have two wives and 10 children. I’m into farming and cattle rearing, but added kidnapping to it. I was carrying out the operations in Kano. I started a year ago. I have kidnapped eight people but got money from five of them. I collected between N1 million and N10 million as ransom. Some of the victims escaped while those guarding them slept off. I was targeting the rich people. We were six in my gang and had three AK-47 rifles. One of my members, Umar, got the rifles. I was arrested with an AK-47 rifle.”

How we got victims

“We usually carried out our operations by laying ambush for victims on the road or visit their homes. We never killed any of our potential victims.”

How I was caught

“I was in my house when police operatives came to me in the early hours of the day to pick me up. I know that Qur’an does not support crime, but I’ll say that my friends misled me. They would be spending so much money whenever we were at a gathering, so I decided to join them.

“I bought a pickup van from my share of the proceeds. I had 20 cows that I inherited from my father.

“My friend, Umar, who is also one of the gang members taught me how to shoot with AK-47 rifle.”

Following a close shave with death, a 59-year-old businessman, Chijioke Nnanna Igbokwe, has undergone surgery, exploratory laparotomy, to let out 57 out of 81 pellets of cocaine stuck in his stomach after seven days of ingesting the illicit substance in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

NDLEA disclosed that its operatives arrested Igbokwe at the arrival hall of Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMIA, during the inward clearance of passengers on an Ethiopian Airlines flight on Sunday, January 26th, 2025.

'He was promptly taken for a body scan, which revealed illicit drugs in his system.

“He was soon after taken into NDLEA custody for excretion observation.

“Investigation revealed that Igbokwe, who claims to be into cloth business at Arena, Oshodi area of Lagos, departed Lagos on January 22nd to Addis Ababa where he ingested the 81 wraps of cocaine the following day January 23rd and boarded a flight to Beirut, Lebanon to deliver the illicit consignment for a fee of $3,000.

Upon his arrival in Beirut, he said he was refused entry because he had less than $2,000, the amount required to grant him entry.

He was then deported to Addis Ababa, where he attempted to excrete the illicit drugs but could not. He thereafter proceeded to Lagos on Saturday, January 25th, with the consignment in his bowel.

“He was, however, arrested upon his arrival at the Lagos airport by NDLEA officers on January 26th.

“After five days under excretion observation, he could only expel 24 pellets following initial medical intervention at the agency’s medical facility and the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) Ikeja.

'With the clock ticking for him and the complication of other underlining medical conditions, the suspect was eventually admitted at the tertiary facility where he had to undergo exploratory laparotomy to extract the remaining 57 wraps of cocaine stuck in his stomach after his wife and brother endorsed the necessary consent forms on Thursday, January 30th.

'In all, a total of 81 pellets of the Class A drug with a gross weight of 1.943 kilograms were recovered from his stomach”.

Meanwhile, NDLEA said its operatives in Lagos on Wednesday, January 29th, intercepted a consignment of 2,000 kilograms of Ghanaian Loud, a strain of cannabis produced in Ghana, at Lekki beach, where two suspects, Sunday Awoyede and Christopher Cletus, attempted loading them into a truck.

The suspects, the skunk shipment and the van, were immediately taken into custody. Another suspect, Lawal Idris Olasunkanmi, was also arrested the same day with 55kg of skunk during a raid at his base in the Mushin area of Lagos.

Across the country, NDLEA Commands and formations continued their War Against Drug Abuse, WADA, sensitization lectures and advocacy visits to worship centres, schools, workplaces, and palaces of traditional rulers and communities throughout the past week.

These include a WADA sensitization lecture to the students and staff of Grand Light Model School, Ata Udosung, Akwa Ibom; Community Grammar School, Iganna, Iwajowa LGA, Oyo state; Ebute Afuye Primary School, Epe, Lagos state; and Akwakuma and Girls Secondary School, Owerri, Imo state.

Others are Federal Government College, Kebbe, Sokoto state, while the Kogi state command of the Agency paid a WADA advocacy visit to Attah of Igala and HRH Mathew Opaluwa Oguche at his palace in Idah, among others.

Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd) commended the officers and men of MMIA Strategic Command for their vigilance and professionalism in handling Chijioke Igbokwe’s case.

He warned those involved in the illicit drug trade that they’re not only destroying the lives of others but equally putting their own lives at significant risk.

He applauded the Lagos State Strategic Command for blocking a vast consignment of skunks from entering the country.

He recognized the concerted efforts of their compatriots in all the commands across the country to intensify the WADA social advocacy lectures and sensitization activities and balance the agency’s drug supply and demand reduction efforts.
