PDP: WHO BECOMES PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE ?

Character: A Core Pillar to Good Success for Governance: As the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is in the process of picking the candidate that would represent the party in the 2019 Presidential Election, character is very paramount in order for the party to excel in the 2019 General Elections. You may ask, what has character got to do with political party? Character derived from the ancient Greek word “kharakter” is defined by Wikipedia as a representation of a person. It further defines character as the aggregate features and traits that form the individual nature of a person, so this confirms the adage which says “show me your friends and I will tell you who you are”.

Character is described as a moral or ethical quality. So, for PDP to succeed in the 2019 Presidential Election, a person of substance with little or no blemish would do the magic for a song of victory at the polls. As the 2019 General Elections approach the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) after loosing the 2015 General Elections to the All Progressives Congress (APC) miraculously and the aftermath of the Chairmanship logjam within the party with a barrage of litigations from different factions, PDP seems to be getting it right again with emergence of Senator Uche Secondus. PDP after passing through various tribulations can be described as heroic coming out of the “den” of a lion going by the unexpected defeat suffered in 2015 when former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan lost as President after 16 years of rule.

The race for the presidential ticket of the People’s Democratic Party is now gathering momentum with the declaration of the immediate past National Caretaker Committee Chairman, Ahmed Markafi and former Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. Recently the aspiration of the two has been matter of debate. Other aspirants are Gombe State Governor Dankwambo whose Presidential ambition started on a low key with few people seeing him as a serious contender. Senator Datti Yusuf Baba Ahmed officially expressed his intention to contest the forthcoming 2019 Presidential Election on the platform of the opposition party, the PDP in April 2018. Youthful Senator, Datti Yusuf Baba Ahmed may have the support of the youths if he eventually picks the ticket to represent the PDP in the 2019 because of his youthful ideology, he may be the candidate to beat and become the Nigerian President in 2019.

Also former Governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Sule Lamido, who was the first chieftain of the PDP to declare his intention for 2019 presidential race on the platform of PDP. The last aspirant who declared intention as of the time this report came up was Dr Bukola Saraki, the Senate President after many weeks of speculations. Saraki declared for presidency having defected to PDP from the ruling APC in a controversial circumstance when all the moves to retain him in APC by President Muhammadu Buhari-led government failed. The increased tempo in the various camps of these PDP aspirants is a sign of the good things to come to PDP, but analysts also expressed fear that the choice of the best candidate among all the aspirants numbering about 15, will be tough and could once again derail the move to wrestle power back from APC.
