Grade A Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, has adjourned for further hearing the divorce case brought before it by a man, Olusina, against his wife, Mary whom he accused of being non submissive, rebellious and wayward.
Olusina stated that Mary was always in the company of bad friends who influenced her in dressing indecently.
According to the plaintiff, the defendant visited hotels with her friends and would drink and get drunk.
Olusina added that he caught his wife with her lovers on three different occasions.
He thus prayed the court to grant him divorce and grant him custody of their children.
He further requested for an order restraining his wife from threatening and fighting him.
Mary agreed to divorce, but disagree that her husband had custody of their children.
Olusina in his evidence said: “My lord, I trained my wife on a vocation while we were dating and we got married after she graduated.
“My wife changed immediately we got married. She became unruly and treated me with scorn.
“Mary always flouted my orders. The more I complained, the worse she became.
“My wife joined the company of bad women and started dressing indecently. She went about in skimpy dresses and sometimes in trousers.
“I warned her against her shameful manner of dressing, but she turned a deaf ear to me.
“My wife visited hotels with her friends, drank and got drunk almost all the time.
“Mary failed to be a good example to our children. She was fond of attending night parties and would return in the morning.
“She told me she wanted to start selling beer and I forbade that she did, but she went into the business.
“Men therefore cluster in her shop every night drinking and getting drunk.
“Mary started dating other men and would bring them to our home.
“She once brought home a man whom she lied was her relative.
“She fought me when I accused her of bringing her lover home.
“My wife fought with a woman over a lover and made herself a source of ridicule in our area.
“Mary was always entertaining a particular man in her shop. She would cook and they would both eat. I was told she had been doing this for long.
“A few months ago, I caught her eating with this man in her shop. I lost control of myself and fought him.
“I met an empty apartment when I returned from office the following day.
“Mary had pulled down the door to our apartment and went away with her belongings and mine.
“She also took our children along with her.
“My lord, I am no longer interested in my marriage to my wife.
“I pray this honourable court to dissolve our marriage and grant me custody of our children.
“I also plead with the court to restrain her from threatening and fighting me.”
Mary responding said, “My husband failed in his responsibility towards me and our children.
“He did not give me a dime for my ante natal care when I had our first child. I was forced to pay the hospital bill before I was discharged.
My husband took to beating me early in our marriage. He would beat me even in the presence of our visitors thus humiliating me.
“He was fond of accusing me immorality, but never had a proof.
“He lent me the money he made mention of. He did not give me.
“My husband is a liar. He was supportive of my beer business. He lent me money to stock my shop with beer.
“My husband and I both contribute towards our children’s training in school.
“He pays their fees while I buy their books, school uniforms and other needs.
“Olusina gave me peanut as feeding allowance per day and would insist on eating breakfast and dinner out of it.
The court president, Mrs S.M Akintayo, adjourned the case.
