Meet Dr. Abimbola Ayodeji Abolarinwa, Nigeria’s First Female Urologist

Dr. Abimbola Ayodeji Abolarinwa is the first female Urologist in Nigeria. She was born in England to a monogamous and humble family but grew up in Northern Nigeria. Her father, a General Surgeon in the Nigerian Air Force, was one of the first medical graduates of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in the 1970s and her mother, a practicing lawyer, both successful in their respective careers. She started her primary education at Air Force Primary School, Kaduna. And then went ahead to Air Force Girls Military School, Jos for her secondary education and then she got admission into the University of Ibadan (UI) to study physiology. But in her second year she switched to study medicine. Her decision to study medicine and further train as a surgeon was influenced by her father who often recounted tales of his experiences at work with his children and occasionally took them to his work place.

Her medical career started in 2004 after graduating from University of Ibadan. She worked as a Medical officer for 2 years before she commenced her residency training at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja. She had wanted to become an orthopaedic surgeon but changed her mind to be an urologist because according to her, urology is very practical, it cuts across being a surgeon and a physician at the same time and there was a need for the specialty.

In 2013, she made history when she became qualified to practice as a Urologist, after passing the Part II of her West African College of Surgeons Examination and emerged as the first female Urologist in Nigeria. She currently works as a Urologist in the Department of Surgery of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, (LASUTH), Ikeja. Abolarinwa, hails from Ilofa, Oke Ero local government of Kwara State, North-Central Nigeria. She is married with two children.
