Ijebu Ode LG Appeals To Gov Abiodun Over Flooding

The authorities of Ijebu-Ode Local Local Government, Ogun State, has sought the support of the Ogun State Government on flooding affecting some parts of the council area.

The Executive Chairman of the local government, Alh. Babatunde EMILOLA-GAZAL made the appeal when he led the the Special Adviser on Environment, Mr Ola ORESANYA; and the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Environment, Mr Femi AKINWUNMI; and other staff of the Ministry of Environment; to the flooded area in the local government.

Speaking during the monthly environmental sanitation exercise held on Saturday, Gazal said flooding has been one of the major environmental problems confronting the council, and which the local government lacked the financial wherewithal to provide a solution to.

“Many properties have been destroyed and same abandoned by their owners, while many lives have also been lost. Two government primary schools were closed down due to the issue of erosion. These has prompted the council to urgently seek for the state government’s intervention under the able leadership of His Excellency Prince Dapo ABIODUN, to come to our aid”, said the Chairman.

“The Governor has been very proactive in terms of development in the state and most of the flooding challenges had been in existence before the advent of the present administration in Ogun State”, the Chairman added.

Responding, the Special Adviser on Environment, Mr. Ola ORESANYA, said critical areas where the community need the help of government in terms of environmental disasters has to be addressed. Majority of the water ways has to be redirected for free flow of water. Many of our people needs to be educated about hygiene and mismanagement of waste as impact of environmental disasters cannot be ignored

According to ORESANYA, some of the erosion-control projects have been presented to the world bank for consideration and with assurances from the Governor, they will be attended to.

On his part, Engineer Ismail ADENUGA from the Ministry of Environment, assured of the Ministry’s total support in finding a lasting solution to the problem.

A resident of one of the areas visited, Alhaji Tunde AGBOMABIWON, appealed to the state Governor to have mercy on them as several letters have been written to previous governments since 2003, and none has shown any positive response to their plea

Some of the affected areas visited include CAC Primary School; Wesley Primary School; Ibadan Road; Talbot Road; Owakurudu in Epe Garage behind Logun Filling Station.
