Group Moves To Curb Harmful Practices Against Girl Children In Oyo

The leaders in Ijeru community, Ogbomoso South Local Govt Area of Oyo State have moved to curb the harmful practises in their respective areas of the city.

It was gathered in One-Day Consensus Building gathering with community leaders, Law Enforcement Agencies, Religious Leaders to put an end to Female Genital Mutilation Cutting (F.G.M.C), held at Atobatele hall Ogbomoso, Oyo State, in accordance with Action Health Incorporated Organisation.

The event was funded by the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA) and United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) of Nigeria.

Our correspondent learnt on the significant roles of the participants which is to ensure women are protected from the harmful acts and other practices in the nation, accelerating the abandonment of female genital mutilation, cutting in Nigeria.

An expert, Mrs. Afuye Lolade, one of the facilitators of the Action Health Incorporated at the event lamented on the harmful practices in every quarter of human nature.

She noted that the female genital mutilation is a gross violation of the fundamental human rights of women, which seriously compromises their health and psychological well being.

Afuye stressed further that the worst experience that could ever happen to a girl-child is female genital mutilation which is on the increase and needed to be curbed.

Mrs. Oluwatoyin Balikis also noted that Female Genital Mutilation doesn’t have any health benefit, advises parents, traditional leaders, youths, others, to stop female genital mutilation.

She added that the notion that unmutilated girls mostly engage in promiscus act and prostitution is now issue of the past.

Chief Adeyanju Adeleke, who represented the Lagbedu monarch also pointed out that Female Genital Mutilation is uncultured from time immemorial, but thanked the organisers for their actions on the programme.
