BUHARI’S GOVT HAS LARGELY DERAILED FROM RULE OF LAW – SOWUNMI
A People’s Democratic Party (PDP) member, who doubles as Atiku Abubakar, PDP Presidential candidate’s spokesman in the recent 2019 Presidential election, Segun Sowunmi has accused President Muhammadu Buhari-led APC Federal Government of working against the Rule of Law. Sowunmi made the prouncement during his media conversation with Seun Okinbaloye of Channels Television on Politics Today Programme recently aired. Sowunmi noted that as beautiful as anti-corruption idea is, there is a bigger need to understand its implications, saying if the idea can’t be fitted within the body of the law available in the country then the idea and action are useless.
He said that the party – All Progressives Congress (APC) that provided political platform for President Buhari, claimed to be fighting corruption but barrage of corruption cases are festering within its family but President is an advocate of Rule of Law and the Rule of Law is being used against opposition parties. “Unfortunately, Nigeria’s law is not expected to run in this manner, it’s expected to be run knowing fully there is deficiency. Series of Human Rights Agencies, including the Human Rights International, have come to the table reporting that Nigeria Government is handling the affairs of the Rule of Law recklessly.
“This is a constant struggle for nation, our society has been in a point where the rule of law and its interpretation by the court and the legislature are not obeyed, and in this manner, the Buhari’s regime has recorded very low in the area of obeying the law enacted in the country. “The government do not respect the rule of law, they have converted their opinions, views and emotions to be the totality of the law in the country which shouldn’t be so. ” I took time to bring our five principle spinners that deal with laws in Nigeria and the failure of Buhari’s administration in this regards which clearly stated that whatever the law says, the government should obey but it’s just unfortunate that Buhari’s government has totally failed.
“There is a principle that the law must be fair, consistent, transparent and reasonably implementable. “When there is appeal which tantamount to the rule of law, the appeal must be obeyed, but this government is not interested, the former CJN, Onoghen’s case has clearly testified to this issue beyond explanation.”
