AS IT IS NEXT LEVEL !

– Oluseun ODUNEYE, Abeokuta

The Nigeria inauguration’s ceremony has become an international day of celebration which occurs in the month of May on every four year in Nigeria’s record mainly for the newly elected President, Vice President, and Governors of the 36 States of the Federation while that of members of Legislative Houses at the National Assembly and 36 State Houses of Assembly come in June.

The APC led administration gained the historical chance to govern the federation in the year 2015 and at the present time, the party has been re-elected in the just concluded 2019 general elections both at the national and some states in the Southwest. With that, APC is now a ruling party in Osun, Ekiti, Ogun, Ondo and Lagos states.

At the 2015 inauguration ceremony, President Buhari made it known to the people that he didn’t belong to anybody and nobody, affirming that the nation has another opportunity to take and drive the new government of APC with their “change” slogan.

Prior to the 2019 general elections, the party miraculously changed its slogan to “Next Level” which calls for several questions by Nigerians, as Nigerians are in the era of the Next Level being the asset of the ruling APC party.

The question is, will APC government restructure Nigeria or focus on their ongoing projects? Will the soon-to-be formed 9th National Assembly members work along with the Executive for the development and improved standard living of Nigerians?

Nigeria has more than qualified personalities in almost all sectors, but our governments are not engaging them, leaving room for a brain drain. Recently, the Kenya Minister of Petroleum came to Nigeria and requested for the Nigerian professors to come to Kenya and help them develop petroleum engineering and geology practice. One can only imagine what the man said and nonchallent attitude of our government to the professionals that leave the country on daily basis.

This now tells us that Nigeria is not an impossible country for us, but we have all failed to do what we are expected to do which affects all of us and frantic efforts must be taken to correct the perceived anomalies.

Now, there should be drastic reduction in the cost of governance, and cutting down on the bureaucracy and perfidious luxury that officials have become accustomed to at the public expense.

The problem has not just started and it is not in dreaming big, rather, the failure of successive Nigerian governments in delivering functional infrastructure lies in misplacing spending priorities, wrong strategies, direct involvement in commercial activities and inhabitation of private capital and investment. This nation cannot fully realise its economic potentials or provide for its rising population unless the above suggestions are taken into consideration and the nation unlocks potentials in the private sector. It is a lesson repeatedly drummed into the ears of our policily makers by development agencies, but which is tenaciously resisted.

Anyway, we can only urge the newly elected administrations, those that are in the corridor of power to work assiduously for the development of this county.
