3 die, 11 injured as vehicle plungs into river in Ogun
Three persons were confirmed dead on Thursday while 11 others sustained various degrees of injuries as a commercial vehicle plunged into Ososa river on the Ijebu Ode – Sagamu expressway.
Mr Babatunde Akinbiyi , the spokesperson, Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) , confirmed the incident to newsmen in Abeokuta.
Akinbiyi noted that the accident occurred around 10:32am , saying that the suspected cause of the accident was mechanical deficiency which led to the bus losing control and plunged into the river.
“Learnt the commercial bus was travelling to Lagos from Ijebu-Ode when it suddenly developed steering rack problem. But instead of the driver to park the bus to find a way of resolving the problem he decided to manage the bus to Lagos with the problem, with passengers in the vehicle complaining bitterly to him to stop the vehicle and do the needful.
“Out of the 3 dead victims, 2 were couples (Husband and Wife), while the driver was among the injured.
“A total of 14 people comprising five male adult and nine female adult were involved in the fatal crash. 11 people were injured while three persons which included one male and two female died in the crash.
“The lone crash involved a yellow coloured MAZDA E220 commercial bus which took off from Ijebu Ode Motor park for Lagos, ” he said.
Akinbiyi explained that the injured victims were taken to the Idera Hospital , Ijebu Ode while the corpses of the dead were deposited at Ijebu-Ode General Hospital Mortuary.
“TRACE Corps is again using this opportunity to implore drivers to desist from managing vehicle on transit to its destination because of the inherent risk and danger involved.
“All mechanical, electrical and human faults noticed before embarking on a journey should be addressed immediately hitting the road.
However, TRACE Corps commiserate with the family of the deceased while wishing the injured speedy recovery.
