Edo First Lady empowers 100 widows in Edo with 4,000 birds

As part of efforts to key into the state government policy of creating over 200,000 in the next four years, the wife of Edo State Governor, Betsy Obaseki on Wednesday boost poultry production among women with the empowerment of 100 widows with 4000 birds.

The widows were empowered through her pet project tagged Edo Women for Agriculture .

BusinessDay reports that out of the targeted 500 beneficiaries 100 widows were empowered in the first phase of the programme in Benin- City at a ceremony to celebrate the 2017 International Women’s Day with the theme, ‘’Be Bold for Change.

The beneficiaries were provided with 20 broilers and 20 layers and one bag of poultry feed each.

In her speech, wife of the state governor said the widows had earlier been trained on management and poultry production towards making them financially independent as well as providing extra avenues of income for them to take care of their families.

She revealed that the programme was in collaboration with the Bank of Industry and Bank of Investment Trust Company.

According to her, I do not believe in giving people fish but in teaching them how to fish. We are collaborating with professionals to train 500 widows on poultry production and to teach them how to make money from the poultry business.

She noted that the poultry production programme, which is part of her agriculture initiative for women in the state is a pilot programme and first of its kind in the country.

‘’This programme is a pilot scheme that will be test run in Benin and would be implemented forthwith across the state’’, she said.

She further disclosed that the launched of the empowerment was to help to galvanize the productive energies of rural women in the state to tackle the problem of food shortages and poverty among the rural poor.

‘’The aim was to create a revolution in the rural poultry production that will increase productivity and income for rural women and empower them to transform access of poor households to source animal protein in the state.

‘’The state government has recently adopted the federal government’s agricultural transformation agenda and has declared agriculture as the guarantee for inclusive economic growth in the country and for this to happen, the agricultural sector must undergo significant reforms to enable a transformation’’, she stated.
